I have been told this forever and I am starting to wonder if this is true or not. I have always been told that if you have a belly that you should lose weight before trying to work out your abs. They say this because you will build muscle and push your belly out further. Is this true?

Think about it this way. Once you lose the fat what will be underneath if you ahven't been working your abs?

You need to have some muscle there as well. Now it may temporarily do that but probably not, but assuming you stick with the weight loss it will go away.

Work 'em. My whole philosophy is this: by the time I lose my belly fat I am going to have amazing abs because I am training them. (I did find that initially I felt bigger - the muscle did push the fat out - but it didn't last long)
Also, as a bonus, muscle requires more calories to maintain - so build - em up and they will help you to lose the fat. (it just may take some time before you can see all of your hard work becuase they are covered by a layer of fat....)

I'd also suggest working them, the rumor is true about them giving you a little bit of a potbelly but on the bright side you can make it look like you gotta baby really easy when your abs get big! I'm pretty thin and it's fun when i'm out in public with my gf pushing my belly out and asking her if she wants to feel the baby kick haha she turns bright red
