for my ft program it recommends 30-45 mins of cardio 3-4 times a week. however, i'm interested in sculpting my body. i was wondering if 20 mins of a harder cardio workout would be better. i read somewhere that you actually burn more fat in shorter aerobic periods. can anyone offer me suggestions?

Do a search on "cardio" you may find your answer amoung various posts.
Generally you want to do 30 minutes of cardi for the fat burning effect. BUT there are always variables. Example:
if you are doing cardi after weight training (glycogen is already depleted)20 minutes of intense cardio may be sufficent. I find this works for me. I find if I am doing it first thing in the morn 30-45 is better for me because it takes me 5-10 minutes to get warmed up!

I agree..

I think ft recommends that you build your way upto the 30-45 minute range..

Yes rocker maybe 20 min of high intensity cardio is the same as 40-45 min easy cardio when talking about burning calories, but not when talking about heart rate and fat burning.
Also you can do 40-45 min of easy cardio every single day, but high intensity cardio only 3-4 times per week.
Just like saying dumbell curls are the same thing as barbell ones.... (o:

Visit a UK site www.muscletalk.co.uk this has been posted many times.
If the cardio is for fat burning its is better to keep the intensity @ medium(50-60% of max heart rate) and do it for 30-40 minutes.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. (Although as you can see, I'm not exactly a good model for how to exercise) :) The point of doing higher intensity exercise is that 1: it will burn the same amount of calories in a shorter time, and fat loss is accomplished by creating a calorie deficit; and 2: higher intensity workouts will help boost your metabolism, which in turn causes you to burn more fat throughout the day. With low intensity workouts, the calorie burning stops when you do, but with high intensity, metabolism increasing exercise, you can potentially burn 1-3 calories more per pound of body weight per day, just by sitting around.

If you are trying to sculpt your body I would look beyond the Cardio Question. We all tend to get caught up in the question of how much, how long, how intense? Well look at this a different way...if you want to "sculpt" you body the best "long term" way to do that is to increase your lean body mass. For every pound of muscle you gain you will burn about 50 more calories EVERYDAY! That means 5 pds of muscle gain is 250 more calories burned a day.(So if you don't eat more to compensate)you should be able to decrease bodyfat more effectively. Now add a little cardio and you are ahead of the game. Look at weight training and a good diet to change your physique. Don't depend only on cardio. Your body will adapt quickly to cardio too! Then when you need to lose a little before a special occasion or swimsuit season the extra cardio will boost your fat burning.

There exist a good solution for you all, and that is always to change..... Never just continue doing the same cardio (or weight training) day after day.
Always stimulate the body so the body will never get use to one specific exercise form is the very best way to stay in shape.
This will work for you all.
