I am having a slight problem figuring out whether I am an Ectomorph or Mesomorph. My brother definitely fits the description for ectomorph. I might fit it, but if so, to a lesser degree so I'm not sure. Any ideas for helping me figure this out?

Its not an exact sciencebut a generalization of bodyt\ types. You can be Ectomorph/Mesomorph. Hows that? I tend to be on the thin side but with weight training over many years I have been able to put on muscle without to much trouble (characteristic of a mesomorph)So who knows? and does it matter that much?

Well an ectomorph has a hard time gaining weight, can burn fat easily, has thin muscle, and a thin waist line. They usually has an excess of energy supply to which causes them to be so thin. One way you can try to test whether you are an ectomorph or not is by taking weight gainers. See how well they work on you. If they don't work that much or not at all then you are definately an ectomorph. You also might be a mixture between the two body types. Not everyone is completely one body type or the other.

Why taking weight gainers just to see if you're ectomorph or not? lol no sense there, you'll just have the risk of getting fat.....

Listen to Itroisi, don't break your head about diff body types. See instead what works for you.

I tend to be an more ectomorph and I would simlpy get fat drinking weight gainers. I don't think that tells us anything!

I'm mesomorph, but I would never even dream of touching a weight gainer lol
Everybody says it's easy to loose fat when being mesomorph, but I can tell you it's not!! We are not (normally) very fat, but if you want to get very lean (for some reason) our bodies seem to keep on on what's left.... the last fat!!
Oh bugger it!! (o: Forget about body types, that's my advice!!

I was trying to figure it out to decide how I should go about gaining muscle mass. I saw what Will Smith was able to do in Ali, I have a similar body build to what he had before, and I'm going for something in between. I don't need to be really bulky, I just want to have enough muscle so that I have some padding for Martial Arts and Wrestling, and that I don't look like a wimp. (It's annoying being somewhat skinny, bullies are more likely to pick on you and therefore I have to fight more than if I were a bit more muscular).

Hey.. good luck with that. But remember that you will not make the gains as quickly as Will Smith did because actors are given small amounts of steroids for movie roles.. others include, Schwarzenegger, Stallone, guy from American History X, Wesley Snipes, Van Damme, etc.

But with hard work and the right supplements you'll reach those goals.

yeah, that's ok, I don't want to get quite as much as he did. apparently he complained that his joints hurt because of the added mass. i don't want that much mass.

Train heavy, get your rest, keep the cardio exercise to a min. and eat a good amount of quality protein 5-6 times a day (at every meal)

Well, one thing you'll have to remember is that when you add mass, you'll be losing some flexibility that's required in Martial Arts. I used to be a Martial Arts instructor and have always kept weight training to a minimum. So, you may have to decide what's more important, looking skinny but can do a side kick above your head or looking a little buff but can only kick no higher than your shoulder...

Good luck.

yeah, girls are more flexible. I think to a certain degree, muscle doesn't affect flexibility, but after a certain point flexibility gets limited, but I don't need to be able to do contortionist stuff, or even the splits.

Heh. That's a tradeoff I'm willing to make. I'm not good at high kicks anyway, and I don't like doing them either. They're too dangerous, and I don't like exposing my groin like that. I figure I will be able to maintain my flexibility while adding mass as long as I stretch.

Well taking weight gainers doesnt neccessarily make you fat, not as long as you are working out as well.

And it's not true..... You forgot endomorph Robert.
You got two opposite body types Ecto- and Endomorph (if you want, the skinny and the fat one...) and then you got the one in the middle, Mesomorph.
Lots of people are half one half another.

Please Robert, if you are not sure then ask us.

the guide here states that mesomorphic is the in-between type and not fat, that's where my problem was
