As have many, I have decided to get into shape this year, for many reasons. I'm 5'11" or 6'0" and weigh 199 lbs. I have never weighed this much in my life. I can't stand looking at my naked body in the mirror. Anyway, last week I started going to the gym every day and eating better, drinking significantly less alcohol - and I quit smoking. I already feel much, MUCH better, but I wanted to get serious about it, so I stumbled across this site. I started a personalized plan today with leg exercises, and it went pretty well. One question I do have is how much additional cardio I should/can add to the personalized fitness plan. I've been told by my girlfriend that if weight loss is my primary concern, then cardio should be my emphasis. However, I want to drop weight while also regaining the somewhat toned form I had in my twenties. I'm 30 now. Anyway, glad to be here!

You are still plent y young to take advantage of your testosterone and get lean. Lift strong/heavy, do moderate amounts of cardio (best on the days you don't lift) clean up your diet. the alcohol will hold you back...try to stick to lower calorie choices if you must drink.
-------------- So what? Im still a rockstar, Ive got my rock moves.....

I guess I don't understand why the cardio has to be moderate. Why wouldn't you want massive amounts of cardio?
:-?

Those are recreational and just fine for a little extra calorie burn.
Most fat loss will be from dietary changes. The additional calorie burn from exercising helps, the muscle training will reshape your body but your will not lose fat if you don't eat coreectly for your goals.

Ok, so whereas pure cardio will result in more weight loss overall (fat and muscle), moderate cardio along with weight training will result in at least equal if not more fat loss than pure cardio, but your overall weight won't drop as much as pure cardio because you are gaining/maintaining muscle mass. Do I understand this correctly?
If so, I wonder about professional sports players. They get a ridiculous amount of cardio and weights. I used to compete in tennis tournaments, and would play a few hours nearly every day. In what way would I be affected if I were to resume such a strenuous tennis schedule?
