I'm new here and I haven't explored the entire site yet. I'm hoping to get some help. I am very down lately because I have multiple running injuries (shin splints, plantar fasciitis and possibly compartment syndrome). All of my running group friends are training for a marathon in May (we all ran the Disney half marathon in Jan. 2008). I was never a runner before training for the half marathon but just loved the motivation of getting to the next mile. BUT I hated the pain. Now, I have gained a tremendous amount of weight and am watching them all lose weight and get excited about this marathon (including my husband). I don't know how to motivate myself to find a new exercise to help me shed the pounds! Any advise?
First off...eat a healthy diet. If youdon't already take essential fatty acids, start. Either fish oil or Udo's perfect blend omega oil will help you bring down inflammation in your system and heal faster.
Non-impact cardio will have to be your route until you are fully healed. i went through plantar fasciitis and I tend to get shin splints if i overdo the running. The elliptical, the recumbent and upright bike, and water aerobics or water jogging are all great low or no impact options. Always warm up gradually.
resistance training will also help you burn of fat and shape up. Resistance training shouldnt bother your injuries, it is non-impact. Pick a plan from here and start right away.
If you don't already do stretches and rolling your feet on a hard ball, begin. rehab those feet, stertch and massge your shins...stretch your calves...it will get better. the thoughest thing with those types of injuries is you feel healed before they are healed. When you feel better enough to run again, wait a few more weeks before easing into a running program again and then be very gradual.
i find my shins dont flare up as much if i warm up for 10-15 minutes on the elliptical or bike before running.
Good luck! :) and welcome to ft!
