Is it possible to do a dumbell workout routine for all major muscle groups and still get a defined chest/shoulders/back? I found a routine online that I wanted to try because I don't have a spotter at home for certain excercises.

Hmmmm. I guess if you had a variety of dumbells, progressively heavier weights to grow into. You would have some trouble, I think, hitting certain areas, but you could certainly get some definition. Mass, not much. Definition, yes. Presses, flies, curls, rows, laterals.

I like to do dumbells only for a couple of weeks to break up a cycle. I can't normally do more than 70-80% of my normal rep weight but you can get a stretch that's beyond compare. It's easier to go heavy if you can have someone hand you the dumbells for the super heavy ones.

There's nothing worse than staring at the end of the dumbell 2 inches above your face in the middle of a cross face tri extention when your muscle is locked and your spotter is awol...

NO!! I mean what I'm talking about is when you are completely drained. It's everything you can just to keep the dumbell from caving in your skull! I hate that!

I got you. Fortunately I do have a spotter, because that would suck. How about one of those welding masks? It would deflect some of the blow, d/b would still cause some blunt trauma, but more contusion that than open sore....Just a thought.

LOL! That is too funny. No, luckily that has happened once and I decided it was time to get a spotter.
