Getting back in shape.

Right now I'm at a point where I want to get back in shape, but my tendons don't support as much weight as my muscles. When I'm lifting (especially benching) my joints (elbows and wrist) start hurting. Is there any supplement or exercise that I can take or do to keep this from happening?
