how is everyone tonight? My name is patric and I started my diet yesterday but dont officially start my workout until monday. I started stretching and light exercise yesterday as i have been mostly sedentary since I left the military 7 years ago. I know.... a long time not to do much huh.....? I joined the military at a whole 170 pds, today i am 250 pds :o( I hate what i look like and how i feel when i wake up. My problem has never been over eating, but eating the wrong things and my particular vice has been caffeinated soda with which have drank at least 3 liters of every day since i was sixteen. Im 30 now and I cant really see my toes anymore without bending over. I went from a large shirt to a 3x and even then after a few washes i have to buy a new shirt so i dont feel like im suction cupped into my clothes. Ive tried every fad diet and get slim gimmick on the market and they have all failed me. I would lose weight for a while and then plateau only to get discouraged and give up time and again. I think my motivation is what hurts me the most. Every time i plateau i give up because i dont see results anymore. Ive done some reading on here and have come across what ive always known but have never wanted to except.......im not on a diet....im changing my lifestyle to live better. My wife and I made a bet this time to get us started on our road to weight loss.....but after doing some reading i think its a bit misguided. we bet each other that the one that lost the most weight after a month would get something special......but i dont want to just lose weight for a month and gain it all back next month, i want it to stay off this time and i know now there is no way to rush it. I am hoping that this will be a successful change for me as i know that if it doesnt work i will be a good candidate for a heart attack. I have cut soda out of my diet, as well as all caffeine products. I havent started feeling withdraws yet for which i am thankful. As for my diet, thats a little trickier, I work two jobs, own my own photography business, and go to school full time. 2 of my 3 meals a day are eaten away from the house so i will be looking for things that will keep on the go and that are easy to prepare.
Health wise im doing ok....my weight has finally caught up with my bones and i have pain in both of my feet/ankles to the point that walking is irritating and anything involving weights right now is out of the question as far as my lower body goes. My blood pressure and heart are good according to the doctors but my cholesterol is high(imagine that). I just started taking vitamins to meet the nutritional needs that this site says i should be at but i would like to get most of my vitamins from my food instead of eating empty calories. Other then that, i know i rambled on for awhile, and i thank you if you made it this far. I hope to get to know you all in due time and I will offer to you all the support I have. I know i will need your help a lot along the way too.

Hi Patric,

I made it all the way through your message and would like to say congratulations on making the right choice; lifestyle over diets!

Obviously with your life being hectic with jobs, school etc you're going to find it difficult to exercise as much as you'd like but it's definitely worth getting up that little bit earlier or making that extra allowance of time to do it, this is where the real changes will happen!

I eat 1-2 meals away from my home every day (breakfast and lunch) and I can seriously recommend a good quality meusli or crunchy oat cereal for breakfast with a piece of fruit if you're still hungry. Both will keep easily as long as you have access to some milk wherever you eat (easy at my work).
With the lunches, I have one simple rule - make it yourself! Even if you're buying "home made sandwiches" from shops, cafes or sandwich vans etc you don't have any idea what quality of food has gone into them. Making the lunch and putting it in a box in the fridge the night before means it's nicely chilled when you come to eat it and you don't have to think about it the next day.

Anyway, my message is nearly as long as yours now so I'll sign off, good luck and keep us posted!

Hi there, yeh, just like alex says, home made is best, for your high cholesterol (i have the same, and a touch of high blood pressure) the best thing is plenty of fibre and citrus fruit, so home made wholemeal bread sandwiches and fruit would be ideal for your lunch, also up your water intake. Have you tried swimming as an exercise as it is very low impact and good for cardio.
Good luck, and i'm sure you will get plenty of support.

Wanted to say welcome and some advice: Take it easy with the exercise thing for a week or two...ease into it and make small steps.

FOR MY WIFE:
Her little ring was a little thing
but it was all that i could afford
now shes mine all mine
till the day i die
and i never wanted nothing more
