EMTB2006,
Hi, I read your post and wanted to send you a high five on your determination to get in shape. I was an EMT for many years until becoming a RN. I currently work as a flight nurse for a helicopter service. We have to weigh in on a scale every shift and our flight suits must not be tight. I also understand the lifestyle of the health care worker, especially when we sit around the base for hours waiting for a call, we tend to eat, and eat sugary fattening foods. Here are some suggestions that I use to help me keep fit for my job:
1. I make a huge salad enough to last a 48 hr shift.
2. I bring carrots, celery sticks, etc. to snack on.
3. I drink a lot of tea, some caffeine, mostly herbal. If you need a sweetener use STEVIA. Stevia is a natural sweetener from a plant and it does not raise your glycemic index nor does it have any calories.
4. On you days off, walk outdoors, get some fresh air. Start slow so your body can acclimate. Walking on trails is easier on your joints than pavement but if you don't have trails pavement is great, just make sure you have good footwear.
Good luck, as an EMT you have the drive and compassion to help others just don't forget that you need to "put the O2 mask on yourself first so you can effectively help others".
