Lose weight or put on Mass First

Hello everyone. I'm looking for advice on whether I should try and start a workout plan to lose weight or put on lean muscle mass. I've been in the Army for 13 years but as me and my wife have had more kids over the years, I have found more and more reasons not to work out. I have ballooned to 5'8, 216 pounds and dont feel like I am in shape at all.

I am deployed now so I don't have the kids as an excuse not to work out. I really would like to use these next 6 or so months to get back into the shape I used to be in. I would like to attend Airborne School when I get back but right now, I dont feel I am close to being in shape for it.

What type of plan would you guys recommend for me to start out with to get back into shape? Should I try and drop pounds first or put on lean mucsle mass?
