I am a 33-year old single male who loves to work out and really wants to get in shape. Recently I joined Planet Fitness and have started working out again. Last monday I went to the gym and spent 40 minutes on an ARC machine (I think that is what they are called) and absolutely loved it.
However I am worried about starting to work out again. My workout on Monday made me realize just how much I missed working out. A little over two years ago I joined a gym and started working out again. However, I only lasted about 2 months. And it wasn't due to lack of motivation or exuberance. I absolutely loved it. I was at the gym almost everyday. Some days I did weights and some days I did cardio. Some days I did both. I was very gung-ho about it.
However, I believe I overdid it. Instead of being smart and starting out slow, I went overboard and my body couldn't handle the workouts. I hadn't exercised regularly since high school, over 10 years. Needless to say, I developed tendonitis in both my right arm and right leg. Why it only happened on the right side of my body I have no idea. After seeing a doctor, I ended up in physical therapy. Eventually my arm and leg returned to feeling normal. However, my spirit was broken (I was also struggling with depression at the time), and I never returned to the gym. I was afraid that if I worked out again, even if only once or twice a week, the tendonitis would return. Luckily those days of feeling that way are far behind me.
So anyway, I am working out again. My goal is to eventually be in great shape. I am not interested in bodybuilding. I have no desire to look like the Incredible Hulk someday. However, I would like to have a toned body someday, whether it takes a few months or a few years. I currently have a gut that I definately want to get rid of. And if I can eventually have 6-pack abs then great.
I am hoping for some advice and support from this forum. I am definately looking for advice for a beginner like me. I do not want to develope tendonitis again and am starting out slow this time. Right now I am limiting myself to weights once a week and cardio twice a week (and not both at the same time). Hopefully my body will acclimate and I will be able to increase workouts over time. I have not developed a fitness plan on this site yet because I want to get more advice first. Because of the tendonitis I developed in the past, I want to get more advice to make sure it doesn't happen again.
I love working out and I look forward to being a part of this forum.
Best wishes to everyone here!
