I have been working out for a few years but have really taken it seriously over the past year. I am shaping up very nicely but I have one problem that really bothers me. My abs. I've had 3 children and gained a lot of weight on all 3. I find that the skin on my abs is stretched and to me is not a pretty sight. It seems to have gotten worse since I've been working out. As my abs get stronger and more muscular with this make the skin tighten as well or is the only remedy cosmetic surgeory
Hope you can help

Working your abs will help it will take time though the abs are the hardest to define because you have to get rid of the fat covering them. I have red that this problem can be created by loosing weight too quickly & not allowing the skin a chance to tighten up. Do a search on this I think you can also find other things such as skin rubs that may speed the process up a little.

Well, the news is not really too good in this arena. The skin does tend to sag in some areas, and no matter what you do, only time will tell. I have personal experience with this with clients I have trained, and my wife in particular, so I have first hand knowledge you might say. My wife has lost 93 lbs. and is now bodybuilding, she has great arms, legs are awesome, shoulders and back. The ab area, you can see there are abs there, but the skin is saggy over them. Also the glute area. We have tried everywhere for a solution to this problem, she wants to compete with me next year. Most of the replies are surgery. One dermatoligist told her lots of fluids, lots of moisturizers, and time! So, long winded answer, but hope it helps, and there is hope. By the way, it has been about 3 months now, and following the advice, they really are getting better.

Just curious bb1fit, did the dermatologists suggest specific moisturizers?

One quick fix is to rub "preperation H" on your tummy area every day and it'll actually tighten the skin. I've seen alot of bodybuilders try this trick to make their abs super tight for shows. It does sound very ridiculous though :D

I would seriously try alot of mid section and upper body excercises to tighten up all the skin wich will end up making the skin around the tummy look tighter. Anything that will workout the chest, intercostals (bad spelling), back, lower back especially and stomach will help in tightening all the skin in the problem area.

I find that as soon as I tighten my lower back and intercostals (the sides of my abs and just below the side of my pecs) that the skin on my stomach tightens right up.

I don't thnk that sit ups alone will help, but you can try alot of silly little things when your bored. I'll sometimes do stomach crunches when driving in my car to work or do semi leg lifts when laying in a taning booth (great for the lower abs!). Anything helps :D

OliveU2: She was told as long as it contained lanolin. Lanolin penetrates the skin. The more the better. As far as the prep h, I too have seen this done, though I have never done it. It is a quick fix only I believe. The bottom line, skin has much elasticity to it as anyone who has gained and lost weight can attest to. Keep training hard and it will get better.

Italian ice - if crunches hurt your back, you are doing something wrong.

Try Pilates, and as Timday said - clean up your diet. Abs are made in the kitchen :)

I am having the same problem. I work out everyday. I change my workout routine, and I workout my abs, and perform Pilates; however, my lower abs skin is has stretch marks, and is flabby. I cannot perform any surgery because of my diavbetes condition. I think I cannot, if there is any doctor out there that can say the contrary please reply. I do not want a very quick fix, all I want is to tighten my abs. :)
