I have become so use to over-eating in the past few years that now when I want to get on a healthier diet, I am finding it hard to maintain my appitite. Does anyone know of any good tricks to help me out when my body starts craving snacks and food when I don't really need it?

How bout you divert your attention. Or you could do the 6 meals a day diet. Have small frequent meals instead of 3 large ones. Try to drink more water. Water gives you the sensation of fullnes.

Basically what taylorpink mentioned.

1. Find things to occupy yourself with, when you are involved you won't pay attention to appetite.
Appetite is also mostly induced by the sub-conscious thought and can cause the body to simulate what is called 'fake hunger'. An example of this is when you smell something tastey, all of a sudden you feel hunger.

2. Drink plenty of water before meals.
This works because your stomach will be somewhat filled with water. However, ensure you do it right before meals and not during. Drinking water and eating at the same time causes the food in your stomach to be compressed by the weight of the water. It creates more space to be filled.

3. Eat smaller meals, but eat more often.
This is actually not only good for the mental part of appetite control but also for your actual metabolism. With frequent meals your metabolism is constantly working and there is not a moment when it is dormant. As for the mental part of this trick you won't feel hungry. If you wait many hours between meals you will be more likely to over-eat at you next meal, even after you feel full. Finally, smaller meals are easier on your body and less calories and energy is put away due to overload.

Hope the explanations helped, I myself have this issue too and these tricks have been working well. I wanted to explain as I feel it is more effective if one knows why these trick work. :)
