I have been reading lots and lots of members' posts and over and over again it states that in order to lose fat weshould do about 10 mins of cardio - to warm up, followed by weight training, followed by 30 - 45 minutes cardio. My goal is to lose about 10 lbs, I have been following the FT weight training program for 2 months and I do 40-50 mins of cardio 5-6 days a week, before I lift - I have GAINED weight! My question is, is it because I was not doing the full cardio after weight training? My diet has remained constant. Please help..it is very discouraging.. |

You message is a common one on this board. Here are some basics that should help. First, muscle weighs more than fat. So, people that weight train may not show weight loss and may, as in your case, gain weight. Second, weight is not a good weigh to measure progress or fitness. Get off the scales and look at how your clothes fit or your bodyfat percentage. Third, manipulating your diet is much more effective to acheive weight loss than cardio. 5 to 6 good meals a day will increase your metabolism and aid in recovery from exercise. It is hard to give specific advice until we know your goals. However, considering your post, I will assume weight loss is high on your list. Combine diet, weight training and cardio for the best results. I warm up with light cardio and then weight train in the morning. In the evenings, I go back for cardio. I get much more out of each by splitting them. The bottom line is - Don't be discouraged. As philia would say, you didn't get your present body overnight and you can't expect to get rid of it overnight either. |

Thank you for responding. As far as 'getting off the scales' - I haven't weighted myself for a few months - I can just feel it.. I like your idea about breaking the work out to morning and night, I just don't think my schedule would allow for it.. |

Lifter is right on. Weight isn't the most important factor. This is especially true for men and a quasi misnomer for women. In the case of women, I've seen very fit women that weigh 5-10lbs more than their counter parts that are more on the petit side. Depends on how much muscle you want and firmness. A woman with nice muscular definition is yowsa! I continue to gradually gain a little weight and my clothes still fit fine. Granted there are days I'm a little bloated but, I haven't changed in waist size. I'm very careful not to gain too much fat which is somewhat inevitable in order to gain weight which eventually turns into muscle with weight training. Therefore it's a delicate game of diet and training. Good luck. DP |

okay, it seems like i've read everything on this message board. My main goal is to lose weight. I like the workouts i do so far, but i've not lost anything at all. My clothes acually fit more snug in my arms, and thighs. the waist has stayed about the same but it's driving me nuts! when i set up my program i chose to do the weight loss. i eas 6 small meals a day, no junk food, or pop. cardio is at least 4 times a week for 30-45 minutes. so what am i doing wrong????.... |

CDEE when I first started training I was so into what the scale had to say. One thing my husband kept telling me was to not put to much stock into that scale. The main reason, muscle weighs more than fat. One other thing, if the cardio before training has put you into stale mate on your weight loss, then switch to cardio after training. Sometimes just a little shock to the body by a change in routine is all it takes. I found this to be true at the end of my body for life program when I was stuck trying to lose that last 5 lbs.-------------- I will lift my own weight someday!!!!! |

Sandysford, I like the idea of switching the cardio to after, but I am really tired after lifting that I don't know if I would make it through 40 minutes. Also, don't I need to do the cardio before to get the blood pumping and that helps with the muscle toning..right? |

I never do anymore than 30 mins of cardio and I do what my husband calls HITT cardio. Like on the treadmill I will walk for five mins and then run for five mins, walk for five mins, run for five mins. I think you get the picture. Get the heart racing then slow it down and start all over again. He also tells me this will burn more calories. When you are tired and you walk over to the cardio section of your gym, just keep thinking what the benefits will be when you are done. I carried a fat picture book of myself with me everywhere just to remind what what it was all about. Anything to keep me motivated. Good luck to you |

I'm new too and have been advised to do interval cardio during my workout - ie do 1/3 of the workout, 6 minutes at 85%; 1/3 workout, then 6 min at 85% etc. Any thoughts on that??
