Hello everyone!

I am a 23 year old female from Canada. I am trying out this site because I recently just joined the gym and I need a work out routine. I have put on quite a bit of weight so my biggest goal is weight loss. I start college in September and I want to have a fresh start. 2 and a half years ago I screwed my back lifting a couch. I now have Sciatica. For about 8 I was barely able to walk. I was depressed... suicidal even (NOT TRYING TO GO ALL DARK ON YOU ALL!!) but for someone who loved being out, being active, and living life... well it sucked not being able to do anythign without crying. Now I am good. I am finally ready to get this weight off that I had gained while sitting on my butt for so long.

I was wondering for dumbells... how heavy they should be. I am just starting out and some of my routines involve me using them a lot. 5 lb? 10 lb? Jeez a 15 lb weight will kill me...

---Hey Shorti, start with what you feel comfortable with.  A good guage is you should be able to do about 10-12 repetitions of the exercise before you think, "I can't do another one".  If you can do 20 the weight is too light, if you kill yourself to get to 7, it's too heavy.  Start with 5 and work your way up.  A bit on the light side would probably be best for you to build up the muscle, wouldn't want anything to happen to your back because you got to ambitious!  On the same track don't be afraid to bump it up once it gets to easy.  Glad you are feeling better! I had briefly had Sciatic issues while pregnant with both my kids and it SUCKS!
