A whey isolate is the best option for post workout recovery, or a amino acid blend - these are the building blocks that have been depleted during exercise and need to be replenished. This should be taken right after your workout. You have a 45 minute window after your workout where your body will absorb the nutrients better than later. Within 60-90 minutes of your workout have a solid meal - meaning real food. A good protein source such as fish, lean beef, chicken or turkey is ideal with slow burning carbohydrates such as vegetables, whole grains, brown rice etc.
Your postworkout meal should include whey, as George suggested, and depending on your goals, fruit. Up until 9weeks out from the bodybuilding competition, I was eating about 16oz of fruit after every workout. Pineapple, strawberries, bananas, apples, etc. This replenished nutrients and refills your muscles. Feels great.
So if your goal is health, dropping a little fat, or building muscle, replenish postworkout.
