I just started lifting a week ago, and as I expected, my muscles have been pretty sore and hurting. However, is it a bad idea to take a really hot shower to try and ease some of the pain? Like, does hot water "un-tighten" the muscles and prohibit me from getting the definition and strength I'm aiming for?

I don't think taking a hot shower following a work out will affect how your mucsles develope. I won't worry about that.
As for the tightness are you stretching? Its very important to stretch both before and after. Before will get you warmed up and helps prevent injury, and I have always found that a good stretch afterwards helps with how tight/sore I am in the following days. If you aren't stretching, you deff should start. Do 5-10 min of light Cardio warm up, stretch, do your workout, and follow that up with some stretching as well.
Also I don't know what your workout program is like..But Its suggested to do pretty light workouts for 2-3 weeks before jumping into a program where you have your body parts split, and your doing 3 excersises per BP and three sets. If you just started, give your body time to adjust to working out, don't just jump into a pretty intense program, it helps you in not being as sore...and that will help keep you focused, and make your workouts more enjoyable.

I'll try to stretch better, it's just difficult because I couldn't really find any detailed stretches on this or any other site. But anyway, thanks a lot guys.

Kaseywak...make sure you're getting adequate protein post workout. Muscle Milk is great for recovery or any whey protein shake within an hour or so after your workout.
Good luck!

A cyclist friend of mine drinks Cytomax to help with muscle soreness on and after long rides. Depending on what type of lifting you're doing (lots of reps, few reps...) I wonder if it would be useful.
