I just started doing deadlifts which is an effective excercise for your back, but I have felt pain in my lower and upper back...how do I know if it's just muscle soreness from working out or if it's an injury? The pain isn't extreme but I've never felt this in my back before from any excercise...help.

If this is the first time, then your muscles could just be adjusting to the exercise. Hopefully, you'll be doing the next session one week from now. If so and if the pain becomes "sharper" then, you could be lifting too heavy. Lighten the load. Also, you could consider wearing a weight belt if going heavy.
I still get a little sore on my lower back after doing these.

My back drives my crazy the day after.. It's tight, uncomfortable, and I can't hunch over.

Me too. If someone finds a way to eliminate soreness and back fatigue after these exercise, please elaborate. I'd pay good money.

prettygentle posted this about back pain on the introduction forum and having been on the receiving end of a diskectomy many years ago thought it deserved to be re-posted here.

I find that starting off with back extensions with weight prior to any other back exercises really gives my back support. Although my back gets really tight when doing the exercise, after I have a good stretch I feel I am able to get better back workout. I sometimes do the extensions prior to ab work as well because my lower back is sometimes sore after an ab workout.
