Alrighty,Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my shins. Sometimes I go jogging outdoors, say through the park etc, they begin to ache after 10 minutes. Sometimes they are fine, but come at the most annoying times, like when I'm in a soccer match. They ache down both sides and it prevents me from carrying on running and I will be hobbling for the rest of the night...any ideas as to what this is, and any cures? ~ Mozza |

First and foremost, make sure your footwear is of high quality. A lot of people overlook footwear because of price and whatever reason, but they are very important to how we feel during and after activities. Bad footwear can affect everything from your toes, feet, ankles, legs and back. Also, the surface you jog on may affect your shins. Hard surfaces like pavement can be brutal for the shins. I know you're playing soccer on grass, but when jogging, try doing that on grass as well. Lastly stretch and strengthen your shins. Try doing some reverse calf raises along with your regular calf raises. Place your heels on some stairs while hanging your toes off the edge and slowly raise your toes contracting your shin muscles, and slowly lower them again feeling the stretch as your toes hang. I'm not sure if ft has a description of these, but give a search in muscle targeting. Hope this helps. Good luck!! |

I used to have bad chins, especially when I run in boots, but the best advice I have gotten was to jump rope. I think that has helped a lot. -------------- Lisa |

They are called shin splints. I think most people who begin running get them at some point. You have to gradually increase the distance and duration of your runs, stop when the shins become aggravated, wait for the pain to subside and then run again a day or two later. As Cain said, they'll eventually go away. Also, as mentioned above, get GOOD shoes! Your shins will eventually get used to your running, it just takes time and pain!-------------- Ischjli "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." -- T. S. Really Cain? Man, I look so forward to eating all 6 times. The only thing that sucks IMO is preparation. I wish I could hire someone to cook for me. As it is now, I cook my stuff, usually for about 5 hours on Sunday, and I prepare meals for the rest of the family. My wife DOES not cook. |

I don't mind the cooking. Finding myself recently single it helps kill time. But after five-six weeks, of chicken six times a day, I start to hate chicken. -------------- Practice does NOT make perfect. Perfect practice does. |

Umm, that is disgusting. I've never in my life seen a cow I thought looked like food to me. I mean seriously driving down the road, have you ever seen a cow chugging away on a salt lick and thought "Hmmm I'd like to eat that". And I do eat tuna, and try other fish, but just eating that much gets to be alot. -------------- Practice does NOT make perfect. Perfect practice does. |

Yes, I have. Nearly every day. In fact, I plan on buying one, having it fed nothing but organic food and then eating it (it is MUCH cheaper to do this than buy steaks). But I realize not everyone likes to eat what I do, or as much. I am very thankful that I'll eat anything. I mean, I just never have had any quams about what was put in front of me, period. I lived overseas for some of my developmental years and followed my father's lead, what he ate - so did I. Now, raw, steamed, seared, red, blue, green, bloody, I love it! So, I guess that is why I enjoy eating so much and so often.-------------- Ischjli "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." -- T. S. Elliot |

Hehehehe, not I said the fly. I used to eat beef, but eh. It doesn't have any nutritional value really that I can't get elsewhere. Not only that, when Jack in the box says their burgers are killing people, I don't have to worry. When ConAgra Recalls 19 Million Pounds of Ground Beef due to E:Coli contamination, I don't have to worry. Ischjli, That is really funny about buying the cow. I actually have a garden where I grow flowers, and people keep saying "why don't you grow vegetables?" and my response is always "Why don't you grow your own cows?" The bottom line is this, if someone else didn't kill my food for me, I'd be dead by now. -------------- Practice does NOT make perfect. Perfect practice does. |

I know, I know. I think I eat TOO much meat. I cook the ground stuff to greater than 160 degrees though, so I think I'll make it. No Jack out here, we have all the others though. I miss Jack. I actually tried stopping just the red meat, and it was then that I realized how much it meant to me. I have REAL cravings. I mean, when nothing but red juicy meat suffices. I too have a garden with loads of flowers, but I grow veggies too. Just to see if I can. |

Actually Rob, with the ground red meat you need to worry. E-coli comes from the feces getting mixed in. You needn't worry about it with steak. I wasn't too sure myself (not that it stopped me) until a few years ago when working for a meat plant's IT dept. The quality assurance head told me that with ground meats come all of the bacteria related problems, as you'll not with this latest Con-Agra recall. Red, or white, cook the ground stuff well. Steaks, no worries man.-------------- Ischjli "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." -- T. S. Elliot |

yeah but c'mon Cain, a good Burger with some pig on it (oh, no pig? Sorry). OK LT and mayo, cheese, ketchup, mustard, onions all of it. Only thing better (man, it has been awhile) is a foot long hot dog with ketchup, lettuce, mustard, onions, relish, and sauerkraut. Hey speaking of hot dogs, I am going to see the Steelers play the Redskins in preseason on Aug 18th at 8 pm. I am gonna heckle the home fans something fierce! |
