Can someone tell me what this is? And how it gets injured? Thanks.

The hip flexors are a group of muscles that move the hip forward when running and walking. All of the hip flexors are primarily located on the front of the thigh and hip. There are 6 main muscles involved with hip flexion, so sometimes it can be very difficult to distinguish which of them is actually injured. Symptoms will be associated with actions that move the leg forward or upward.
Freqently a hip flexor strain is the result of an overly forceful contraction. such as during a sprint or a series of sprints. It can also occur with powerful kicks, such as with soccor players.
Hope that helps....
