Hi there. Im new to this board...I've just been browsing around and reading lots of great advice. I have a question for you all. I have very heavy but muscular legs - hips/butt/thighs AND calves (come to think of it....fairly muscular arms as well) and cant get rid of my pear shape. I signed up with a trainer at my gym for a few sessions and he said that if I lifted very heavy and few reps for upper and high rep/med weight for lower (to try to balance the pear) I would be messing up my metabolism. This is why he has me doing high reps/medium weight on ALL body areas (but i dont feel like Im getting results). Is this advice sound?
Thanks!

Thank you....yes but my question was more about the validity of what my trainer said about harming my metabolism. Is there merit in this? (by lifting low rep/heavy on upper and high rep/lighter on lower?)
thnx

Messing up your metabolism???? Now how could that be? I think your trainer has a strange "metabolism" of his own, but not the kind you are reffering to. We do high and low reps for different body parts all the time. Your metabolism will increase either way, due to more muscle mass, which is what runs your metabolism anyway.Your diet will determine the rest.

Your metabolism doesn't really know what body parts you are exercising. Thats like your sock knowing what hand you take it off with. :) The training all depends on what your goal is. Like bb1fit says no matter what weights and reps you do, it will speed up the metabolic rate. Remember, you cannot spot reduce, and any muscle you build will burn fat. The rest isdone in the kitchen. Your diet is really the excelerater. Hope this helps.

Can he please explain why and how come?
By doing heavy low reps on upper body and work endurance with the lower part, yes you'll be able to get rid of your pear shape. Nothing to do with metabolism but different muscle fibres!!!(except that since you'll be building up muscle mass, your metabolism will be faster).
Now eat healthy, several small meals and lots of proteins and your metabolism will be in perfect shape as well!!
