I am 5"11 and 175 pounds and i was wondering if it is better to work out your chest 1 or 2 times a week. This is my 7 week strait of working out 4 times a week and i have been working out my chest 2 times a week but when i registered for ft they said that i should on do i once a week, and i feel that 1 time a week would not give me as good of results. What do u think? |

Sorry archetype.. there's no way to aim fat loss on certain areas. (it's a common myth) The best you can do is slim down your body fat on a whole and hope some of that leaves from your chest area. -------------- Dont wait! Procrastinate NOW! =) |

Thanks for the tip. I have started running (1.5 miles a day). Is that enough cardio or should I do more? Also, will adding muscle to my chest diminish the nasty way that fat looks?

Damon keep in mind that people are different. Some people get better results training specific body parts twice a week. Others get better results from once a week. Try both ways for a few weeks recording your progress and see which one works better for you.

Hey archtype. Try modifying your diet to lower your overall bodyfat. When do you do your running? In the morning before you eat and before you go to sleep (don't eat after) would be good times to run. 1.5 miles should be enough cardio, just remember to change the intensity of your cardio now and then. And adding muscle to your chest would diminish the fat look as muscle burns fat.

Actually....1.5miles is NOT enough cardio... to obtain a fat burning effect one has to sustain a higher heart rate from anywhere in between 25-60min. 1.5 miles should take an average runner only 10-15min to complete. Not enough to produce a fat loss effect. To diminish fat on the chest DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT do bench press, or anything that puts most of the strain on the the lower pecs. Instead, do inclines to help lift the chest. And do back exercises to help pull it tight. Doing lower chest will only make the fat go out further making it more pronounced and worse off then you were before. Building muscle is a good plan as it burns more calories at rest..i.e. good thing.
Some things to change... 1. Maintain a balanced diet of fat protein and complex carbs. Spread out throughout the day 5-7 meals and snacks. 2. Up the H20 3. Do not look at the scale. 4. Increase length of cardio, everyother day. When you can run 60 min steadily start trying to drop the times. 5. Lift weights, do not run before day of or after leg day. By doing this you will slowly and surely take the weight off. Do not eat less than 2000 cal per day as you will lose energy to workout and lose your ambition to maintain a balanced diet. As for DammonWafford and frequency, moderate to intense workouts may take up to 48 hours to heal and recoupe. Generally the rule of thumb is to take off 72 hours before hitting the same muscle group. Only you know your body, if you can handle another workout then by golly go for it. -------------- Diet- Only take what you need...There is no fine line between want and need, there is the whole continent of South America.~Dick |

my advice on that one is.....pick up a sport!! Running is great, but if you start playin basketball at the local community center or playin football with some friends, I guarantee the weight loss ( that is, if you have a good diet), will occur. And on the running 1.5 miles, try to really push yourself and try do it in as less time as possible....good luck!-------------- If Satan ever tries to remind you of your past, just tell him of his future! |

intensity, intensity, intensity, intensity cadio should never be measured in distance but intensity you can run 10 miles but if you run 5 milrs intensly faster, uphill (treadmill assumption) your going to get a better workout and technically interval training has been medically shown to be most effective good luck

I disagree with the post about not doing bench press or lower chest exercises. I have seen very good results from placing emphasis on these two exercises. I do agree that incline is the most important (as well as the hardest in my experience). I also agree that the back workout has an effect. Good luck.

I have another question about the cardio. I do run 1.5 miles a day, but I also play basketball 2-3 times a week for 2 hours or so. It's mostly shooting for 15-20 minutes then playing a pickup game for the same amount of time. I was wondering which burns more fat, running or playing ball like that. Also, when you do the incline press, how high should the incline be and is it better with dumbells or barbell presses? Thanks for all the help.

IMO, running will burn more fat if you keep your heart rate up and run at no less than 3/4 or your sprint the whole distance. I play a lot of basketball myself and from my experience, it didn't increase my stamina playing for like 2 or 3 hours at a time. I think this is due to the game slowing down in the half court offense and when there aren't too many fast breaks. Also I lost more weight running than playing basketball.

30-45 degrees would be sufficient, Dumbells allow the weight to come down further, and is safer if you can't get a rep, but the bar will allow you to use more weight. It is all preference. And Timbaland is absolutely right on the cardio.-------------- Diet- Only take what you need...There is no fine line between want and need, there is the whole continent of South America.~Dick |

Along with lifting, I do plenty of pushups throughout the week. I'll do 50 regular pushups and then do 30 inclined pushups (for upper chest) about 4-5 times a week. THen I also do my normal routine. Am I overdoing it by maybe burning all my muscle off or should I just lift weights to help my muscles get bigger?

20-50 reps will not get your muscles bigger it will only induce local muscular endurance at most do 12 reps...8 and below would be better though...remember that pushups can never replace weights for muscular growth...there is no comparison in my eyes.-------------- If hard work and persistence were the keys to success, most people would opt to pick the lock.~Dick |

Pushups can only do so much. I too once believed that pushups would get me big and strong and doing a lot of situps every other day would get me a six pack. While it did make my upper body lean, after a while I got no results. I was just able to do more pushups.

So, richardjst, are you trying to say that pushups will not help? So I should not do pushups and just do benches and stuff on chest days? Remember, I am trying to burn the fat off of my lower chest. My upper chest is alright, although I wouldn't mind it being bigger.

You CAN NOT spot reduce...pushups are good for beginers...but they are a dead end road. Weight training will take you to bigger and better heights. To burn weight off the lower pecs. a deficit between calorie intake and calorie usage has to be established with a balance of high quality proteins carbs and fats. cardio will help quicken results. Muscle mass made by weight training will also help burn more calories at rest...To get weight off the chest you unfortunatley cant just work the chest...you have to wait for your body to remove fat over all over time
