recovery time

What is an effective recovery time between sets? I know what I have read, but I feel I may be waiting too long, 2-3 min. Even a little more if I am having a bad day, tired, sore, etc. Is that amount of time effective?

Depends on what kind of training you're doing. If you're working out to get in shape and get cut, 45-60 seconds will do. When working out for mass, wait 1-2 minutes between sets. Powerlifting routines usually require 3-5 minutes between sets.

Shorten your rest periods for leaning, lengthen them for gaining. JB gave you a good time frame. This may need to be adjusted some depending on the day, but is a good rule of thumb for starters. If you are trying to lean, then you want to rest less to keep the "fat burning" engine going. If you are trying to gain, then longer rest periods are needed to recruit as many muscle fibers as possible for the next set, so you can lift your heaviest loads.

depends on the reps and your goal. Sometimes I train at a feel good pace without the stopwatch. Other times I train at a muscular discomfort pace where I cut my rest time down. Rest time is another factor in the intensity equation and I like to vary mine like I do my exercise plan.

Good point Gator. I keep my rest periods shorter on weeks where I want to maintain a higher intensity. But this varies from week to week.
