Well that depends on what do you want it to do! They are great for a recovery drink after a work out (this should be a blended protein with whey). I use them as 2 of my meals (reduces cooking!) and late at night when you want to snack have a small protein drink instead. They help you get in the protein requirement of 1-1.5 gr per pound of bodyweight. Otherwise you need to eat lots of protein sources which is not always easy!
How shouldn't it work?..... It's just a supplement of proteins.... You cannot replace all your meals with protein shakes, but you can make sure of giving enough proteins to your body. BUT if you are not weight training or doing any sport, well then too much proteins can make you fat as anything else....
