Yes, I will be the first to admit it, Im a chicken! I would like to introduce myself as a new member on this site, Im sure that I can look to all of you for support and motivation...so, lets begin! I was all excited to add weights into my training schedule, on the list today was legs and all I ended up doing was cardio (like always). I even brought my training book and everything but I cant get the guts to go over there? Why? I have no idea, its like Im shy ore something (which is soooo not like me) I have never felt so ummm...silly, shy, childish...I cant even describe the feeling. If any of you have any suggestions, let me know so I can get this show in the road!

You just have to know that it's YOUR body and YOUR choice......
If you want a great toned body well then you need to jump out in it..... Don't be afraid or shy and don't exercise for anybody else but yourself.
We'll be in here to help you all we can. Good luck!

I used to be feel the same way about the weight area in my gym because everyone "looked" so intimidating working with such heavy weights. I used to think I wasn't worthy. I made a couple of appointments with a personal trainer to show me around and now I love it. All it took was one appointment with the pt to realize I had nothing to be afraid of. I really met some great, easy going people who were not so intimidating after all. Another great thing about working out with weights is how fast your body will transform, trust me you will never want to do just "cardio" again!

I understand this totally. Out of all the info and knowlege i've picked up the most important for me was 1 sentance - "leave your pride and ego at the gym door". When i'm lifting 1 third of what most people seem to be it can feel embarising, or that you shouldn't get in the way of the people lifting more.
Rubbish. Ignore them, they were you once, probably not long ago. Most of them you'll see using very poor form just to lift heavier weights to look good.
You lift and train to look good for the 23hours your not in the gym, not for the 1 hour you are there =)

That's the reason why I bought a home gym. I didn't want to subject myself to those feelings of inadequacy (warranted or not).
Actually, that was just one of the reasons (the other is that I know I'll never keep up my workout habits if I had to leave my house and drive to a gym every day - if all I have to do is walk downstairs to the basement and "be at the gym", that's one less excuse I have :-)
Seriously, if you don't want to subject yourself to the gym scene (worrying about the people, waiting to use machines, wiping off the sweat that someone left, etc) then think about buying a home gym or free weights. Once you are comfortable with weight training (and if you still want to join a gym by that point) then go ahead and you'll be more confident.
But don't let the fear of embarrassment stop you from weight training - there are other alternatives to the gym.

Brat, don't forget that EVERYTHING in life is hard in the beginning. STARTING something seems to always be the biggest obstacle. Fear of the unknown and the unfamiliar can be powerful. If you could just take that first step, I bet you'd find that it wasn't as big a deal as you imagined it to be. And each new success gives you the confidence to move forward. Remember, you deserve to be there (in the weight room) just as much as anyone else.

Thanks a lot guys for the ideas and support, I really think that to begin the weight training Ill just try the stuff at home until Im really comfortable. I tried working with people that work at the gym (its a small gym so there isnt many) and they arent very nice, they actually make me feel worse. They compete in body building competitions and it seems that if I dont look like a competitor, I dont get the attention that I need. So, after all of that, I will be in the weight section, but until then Ill try an "at home" stab at it! Thanks again!

Hey; Ya gotta just be bold, go after what you want, and ignore the rest. You only live once, dont let something like shyness delay your goals.
