How do you keep your cheat days in moderation? I understand not binging out and eating in moderation but what is a cheat day like?

The best way to handle a cheat day is to have a small portion of whatever it is you really want. By eating small portions, you get the taste, the flavor and then enjoyment without getting the guilt.

But sometimes it helps to have just one bad meal, no matter what it is, and then go back on your diet the rest of the day. That's how I handle it sometimes.

Try both and see what you are able to enjoy best.

I agree cheat days are needed for everyone, just try to keep a handle on it. But if you really pig out do not be that hard on yourself, maybe your body needed it, but in any case just start again the next day.

If you are worried that if you eat something you "shouldn't" it will make you blow the whole day, just pick a food that isn't in your normal diet and eat it and then just not calculate into your day. That way you can have your cake(diet) and eat it too. Hee hee.

A cheat day does not mean double quater pounders with cheese and ice cream and ho ho's all day. What it means is to take a day away from your normal dieting regimine, and enjoy yourself somewhat. Have that scoop of ice cream, satisfy your most urgent craving. Then get right back on the diet and keep going. The cheat is meant to serve the purpose of keeping constant cravings to a minimum, so you don't go binging on them. I personally use them as "reward" days for going so long a period of time(of your choice)of being good! Then it actually reinforces my resolve to get back on the diet and keep going. Best of luck.

What is the significant purpose of a cheat day and do you have to necessarily have one? Does it help your system in anyway? Good post, yet again ravenwolf!! Like your style!

Well in the BFL way of thinking, when you put your body through an extreme change in diet, it can cause it to go into shock. while you are dieting, it is good to add a different diet regime at least once a week so it can give your body a chance to work, burn those extra carbs that it doesn't have during your regular diet. does this make sense? i hope i clarified it for you. lydia, if you go to the BFL website it describes in detail exactly what the purpose of a cheat(free) day is. ". It is also important that you over-feed the body a little bit once a week, it helps convince your body it’s not starving and it hasn’t hit a famine. Throughout time, our bodies have had to adapt to times when there was a lot of food and times when there wasn’t enough. If your body feels that there is a food shortage, the fat will come off slower. So the Free Day, believe it or not, accelerates fat loss." http://www.bodyforlife.com/qa/answer_text.asp?answer=8107

I just had a cheat day yesterday....... BUT even on my cheat days I keep an eye on the total calorie intake, I just eat differently (yesterday it was licorice and looooots of crunchy dark cereal bread!!!! lol)

It's easier to stick to the diet when you KNOW that you'll be able to eat something you like in two days or Sunday.....

Physically, if you cycle your total carb intake your body DOESN'T really need a cheat day..... It's more a mentally need.

My technique has been to eat regularly and drink 2000 cals of wine and beer a night. THEN when I actually go on a diet I will quickly shed the weight, as I stop drinking on Sundays, Wednesdays, and holy days - and during (most of) the day when I drive the school bus. Unfortunately it hasn't really worked out as planned...wonder why...

BTW, the point of my silly post above was that alcoholic beverages (or pop or whatever, for that matter) can be disastrous to your diet. I know that's common knowledge but it really hits home when you try to enter 6 or 7 beers into your nutrition plan. Ouch!!!! And the nutritional planner doesn't take into account the fact that recreational drinking occurs late at night before sleeping, or that alcohol is involved (which I think lowers metabolism and such). To tie it all in, I've been using my cheat day for having some drinks at a party but I'm not sure it is worth it...
