Hi everyone! I've been getting back to lifting lately and will be training for the Boston Marathon soon. Now, I'm not training to win, but just to finish. How can I set a workout where I can actually can muscle mass with my lifting and lose fat while running? I've heard so many opinions and much advice on this, but I know there has to be a way to change something so that I can do both. If you have any suggestions, please shoot them out...

Oh you can get a nice athletic body (which really isn't that bad at all!! ;o) but don't think you can keep a huge muscle mass and do marathons......
Eat lots of proteins to keep your lean muscle mass.
All the very best luck to you!

I agree Philia2, lot's of running, i.e., high calorie burn activities will reduce your ability to gain muscle mass. I know this from experience and have chosen to keep an intensive cardio program in addition to weight lifting despite that fact. I'm making progress in the muscle arena but, it's much slower than if I was totally dedicated to weight training.
Good luck. DP

dpking, what kind of cardio do you do each week? I am trying to get an idea of what might be good for me to work with. Right now running at 65-70% of my max. heart rate is too slow for me and I know I'm not burning much fat running at 12 minute mile paces. Give me a hand here

rchugan31, I'm doing mostly running now. I was biking a lot in the summer but, the weather where I am is now getting fairly cold. I bought a heartrate monitor and my running is at or above 85% of max during the entire run. Some of that is due to the formula of "220-age" not being accurate for people in shape. If you can get your heart up to 80% and keep it there for 15 minutes or so, you'll start noticing a difference in endurance and your breathing will get easier. Most importantly, you'll start losing fat assuming you're following a good diet.
Good luck. DP

I'll try and keep my HR around 160, which should let me run at a decent pace while building some mass at the same time. I will run the marathon just hoping to finish, but at least I'll have a little bulk! Thanks guys.
