whey protein has multiple benefits, and should be part of any regimen. it has a broad spectrum of amino acids and is quickly absorbed. however, therein also lies its weakness.

since it is absorbed so quickly, it is great for post work out meals, but thats it. throughout the day, u need to be taking in slower absorbed proteins like milk, eggs, etc. also, because to of the sensitive structure of the whey protein molecule, it can be damaged very easily by stomach acids if taken on an empty stomach, so take it with carbs. this combo is also good as a post work out meal - study after study has shown that carbs taken with protein (2:1 ratio) is the most effective in initiating muscle repair. the carbs replenish the glycogen stores in the liver, while allowing the proteins to avoid being converted to energy and letting them do what they do best: repair tissue.

hope that helps. good luck.................Michael

did you say a teaspoon of it in water? go for the whole scoop. teaspoon isn't enough to see benefits!!!

The proteins are the bricks you need to build your wall of muscles with.
As ltroisi said a teaspoon isn't enough.

Good stuff! But like others have said here, you need to take more. Try looking for protein powders that contain a good mixture of carb/protein to get those transported to the right places.

Good luck!

However, if you use a mix with carbs, take care to check that the majority of the carbs aren't from sugar! IMHO, I think that the best way is to get a good protein powder you like, and either blend it when fruit, or have a piece on the side with it. :)

Michael...doesn't whey protein come from milk and therefore animal-based? (See www.bodybuilding.com/store/whey.html) Many studies have shown whey protein to be the most superior form of protein that delivers BCAAs to the body!

Anyway...just an fyi.

Whey does come from milk, and I never said anything was wrong with it or any other animal based product. In fact, animal based is THE only way to go.
Spectrum and fast delivery-wise, whey is the most "superior;" however, that is not the only thing to rank a protein by. As I said above, it is not a good protein to be consumed all day. One must blend their proteins throughout the day in order to stay in positive nitrogen balance. If you consumed whey protein every 3 hours (like a lifters should eat), your body would be starving for protein and start going catabolic after about the first 1 1/2 to 2 hours. With other basic proteins, like eggs, the body gets the "trickle-down" effect of protein needed in order to stay anabolic.*

Gotcha! There just seemed to be a little contradiction to what you had previously posted. In any event, a good mixture of protein sources is required by the body...not to exclude soy.

Thanks for clarifying :-)
