If you don't eat your target amount of protein (contained in food), then yes you should drink a shake or two to keep your amount of protein high. REMEMBER: Your rest days are your recuperation days. How can you recuperate without proper nutrition?

You should take protein at every chance u get. But, you should especially take it right after u work out and in the morning.

it is known that in order to build muscle mass, you have to consume at least 1g per pound of protein. for you to know whether you should be taking your protein shake, make sure that you have packed enough protein in your body throughout the day. for instance, if you weigh at 200lbs, then you must have at least 200g of protein a day. if the solid food you take does not provide you with the sufficient amount of protein, then you might want to consider taking up those protein shake. but always remember to consume protein from solid foods rather than the shakes because it will help you to packed up better quality muscle mass.

All good advice given here. Remember, protein supplements do just that...supplement what you don't normally get on a daily basis.
