I was told by somebody that when he was younger he used gelatin powder as a protein source. He said it can be bought at a grocery store and is pretty cheap.Has anybody tried this and is it safe/healthy?

Gelatin is made from the collagen protein found in bone, skin, and cartilage. When beef or pork are boiled the collagen is extracted and changes into gelatin. Sure, its safe and it may even be healthy. However, this stuff is pretty much useless. Gelatin is not a 'complete' protein, which means it is seriously lacking in many important amino acids. In fact, if you look at the products where gelatin is a major ingredient, it will sometimes say "Not a significant source of protein." You can eat 3 pounds of Jell-o or gummi bears a day, but you won't see any muscle-building results.
