Dunno if anyoje has any insight on this, but I recently started taking iron supplements (as my new multivits don't have iron in them) and I seem to be having quite a constipation problem. I've heard that this can be caused by iron tablets. Any ideas/solutions? I don't want to cut down on the iron as I am borderline anaemic, and although I eat green veg I don't eat much red meat. Thanks

Then perhaps you need more fiber in your diet?

Iron will do that to you. I know quite a few people (mostly women) who had taken iron and has had the same problem. Go to a medical site like www.webmd.com (or something like it) and do a search for iron supplimentation. I'm sure all of you questions will be answered. Fiber isn't a bad idea, but do a little more research, too. Good luck!!

As mentioned fibre increase is good and make sure you are getting lots of water, this will help considerably. Also some times it takes the body a little time to adjust to mineral intake

Kitten, I used to apprentice with a home birth midwife and we ran into this problem all the time with our pregnant clients. You might try a liquid, plant based iron supplement like Floradix; shouldn't make you constipated at all. If you don't want to switch supplements you can try taking your iron in smaller doses throughout the days WITH MEALS. You'll absorb it better this way, anyway. Just try to take it with foods that are rich in vitamin C rather than calcium, which can inhibit iron absorption. Fiber is good but water is the key; if you get lots of fiber but not enough water it can actually increase constipation which is the last thing you want!
