Someone told me that taking a multivitamin for too long will cause kidney stones, I never heard it before he told me, and I'm not really sure about it. Any responses?

I've taken them for over 20 years (since I was about 4). No problems. If you never drink water and let all of the metabolites of certain nutrients build up in your kidneys, then yes I can see where it can cause harm. Normal people won't have any problem at all. That "someone" needs to do some more research before he/she gives info about a product.

There are so many "experts" around. Take what you hear with a grain of salt if they have no evidence to back it up. As JB says, I, too have been taking multi's and others for well in excess of 20 years. No kidney stones here!

i would assume that their theory would be related to the excess consumption of minerals, such as calcium, which MAY lead to the development of stones. however, there are many things that contribute to kidney stones, especially genetics. but not a multi-vitamin all by itself.

the best thing to do would be to discuss this with your doctor, and review your family history, blood work, etc. that would be the best way to conclude if you are a canidate or not for stones.

Rev8ball hit it on the button. I have been taking mvits since as long as I can remember.Unfortunately I get the odd kidney stone flare up about avery 5-6 yrs. The results have shown that after looking at it, that it is strictly calcium build up in the kidney. The size of a grain of sand or smaller. The drs never told me to stop the multi vits but to drink more water. SInce training I drink a gallon a day, I'm waiting to see whAts going to happen. Hope that helps.
