I was wondering if the general consensus of ZMA is that it is the best thing to take at night for recovery of sore muscles and also growth or is there something better for recovery like maybe HMB? I want to make the most out of my rest time healing and growth potential. Any thoughts appreciated.

ZMA is one of those supplements that gets asked about quite a bit on here and it seems to be a toss up from what I've read on the posts. I do take it occasionally but in my case it ensures a good nights sleep. You might want to read up on the basic supplements like creatine and glutamine. I can definitely feel a difference when I'm not supplementing with them. Other than that, the best thing you can do for recovery is make sure you're getting adequate recovery time between workouts and plent of rest and a clean diet.

I think ZMA is one of the few products on the market that actually works. Its great for boosting testosterone naturally - not many other supplements can make that claim. By boosting testosterone, it creates an anabolic environment in your muscles while you sleep. Before you take ZMA, I would suggest eating a high protein snack just before bed. Just be sure to avoid calcium an hour or so before and after you take ZMA. Calcium and magnesium compete for absorption and you want the full effects of the ZMA without anything interfering. The zinc can also boost your immune system, thereby helping your body recover from workouts faster while fighting off those winter-time colds.

HMB works for some people. I have tried it, but I must be one of the people that it didn't work for. HMB is not cheap by any means. Opt for the ZMA. Its not a miracle supplement, but it helps. Also, if you're not taking glutamine, DO IT!!!! That's some of the best stuff you can possibly take. I recommend that to everyone.

All research I have read says HMB by itself is basically a waste of money. It may have some value taken in synergy with other products, but I think the effective doseage is extremely high and not practical. I have never tried ZMA, have used Gaba though. Also some claim that glutamine before bed is good, promotes GH release. Let us know if you have any good results with the ZMA. One thing,no matter what, get a good brand. Cheap brands of anything will do you no good. Thanks for the info JB.

HMB....

A recent study in the International Journal of Sports Medicine revealed
HMB showed no affect on any markers of protein breakdown and
showed no increase in strength or change in body composition. Put
simply, HMB didn't work.
