I just started taking protein shakes. I drink 1 shake on my off days and two or three on the days I work out. What I wanted to know is should I take it before or after my workout, or even before and after. Thanks.

Both are optimal times. Depending on your goals and your finances. Recent research has shown that the pre workout drink may be even more anabolic than the post workout drink. If you have no fat issues, and gain is strictly what you are after, then both are geat to do. Your goal is to be in a postive nitrogen state as much as you can be, thus no catabolism.

well, I'm not overweight but I could lose some pounds, and I dont really want the big look. I'm actually going for a more ripped look. So am I even taking the right stuff. Or is there something else that would benefit me more.

What are you taking? And are they the same, the 3 on your off days? And what are your meals like? Lots of questions to give you a good answer.

I'm taking 100% whey protein and total lean, and since I've been taking total lean I usually only eat 2 times a day lunch and a light dinner

You are not eating enough. 2 times a day is a great way to fail at obtaining your goals. Your are skipping one of the most important meals, breakfast. You need to shoot for AT LEAST 5 balanced meals per day, 2 of which can be healthy snacks. By only eating 2 X's per day, your body holds on to anything you put into it. That is not a good thing. I understand that you don't want to get big, but to be honest, most people really don't need to worry about that. Eating 5-6 times per day will keep your meatbolism running high and will help you in losing weight and achieving a leaner look. Good luck with your program.
