I would like to know what you think are the best exercises for gaining strength. Your best strength gaining exercises in other words.---------------------------- "Some people call it insanity, I call it intensity" |

Deadlifts, squats, bent rows and chins. Bench press to a certain degree, as well as the ole shoulder press. Pretty much in that order.-------------- Those who lift understand it. Those who do not, think we are crazy! |

You mean bent barbell rows? And if so, with an overhand or underhand grip?-------------- "Some people call it insanity, I call it intensity" |

Either or I like the over hand grip cause you can use more weight. the under hand grip hits the back from a different angle but if you go to heavy there is a chance for biceps to get hurt....that is how Dorian Yates blew out his bicep....it is safe as long as you go easier at it.-------------- Those who lift understand it. mutt is right on. basically any excercise that requires multiple muscle groups, or just most of your body in general, squats being on top.and as mutt said, and would stick with the overhand for rows: i think it hits your back better and takes more of the stress off your biceps. -------------- Michael "Trample the weak; hurdle the dead!" |

Anything that is a compound movement, i.e...working a muscle group. As mutt says, these are excellent movements. Isolation movements may have their uses, but not for building mass and strength. Low reps,as heavy weight as you can handle. |

Yes...lift heavy and eat! Train with intensity. Do not have 3 meals, but 5-6 solid whole food meals, filled with protein, complex useful carbs, and some fats(not saturated if you can help it.) Have a couple protein shakes with a tbsp. of flax oil or 2-4 tbsp. of heavy cream besides. Do this on a consistent basis, and you will gain. |

I'd say squats, deadlifts, bench press (the big three) and chins. All the compound movements. Also, the Olympic lifts are good for explosive and maximal strength.-------------- "Don't follow leaders and watch your parking meters!" -- Bob Dylan |

A deadlift is done standing up using a barbell, and a bench press is usually done lying down on a bench lifting a barbell. (See exercise descriptions on this site).

for full body power, deadlifts, cleans( of any kind) and squat( sumo, jumping, etc.)....
Bench pres can be a power move if done properly so can miliatry......both are mutli joint however don't require as much core strength, as the cleans deads and squat. I like to do bench press and stuff on physio balls, so i have to balance, as well as press. Same with miltary, i like to do it with out back support, so i have to use my abbs more. Other excercises I concider good strength devolopers for the excercises listed are...... Lunges, stiff leged deadlifts, back hypers, ham curls Floor presses, close grip press, lockouts pull ups, rows( barebell) skull crushers, and barbell curls. -------------- .......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! ......minds are not vessles to be filled, but fires to be enlightened ......Confucious once said ,DO NOT play leap frog with a unicorn |

parallel squat, the king of all excercises

I'll have to agree with Wrestler, the paralell squat is KING.-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. I've been doing power cleans....it's hard to get used to the form and everything and you need to have pretty flexible hips, but it's helped my power quite a bit. I can tell a huge difference when I'm playin basketball, and I've only been doing them about a month or so.-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. Some strength training coaches recommend doing heavy power cleans over the deadlift, partly because the deadlift is easy to overtrain your back with the heavy weights used. I disagree, but I still love the Power Clean. Great Excercise-------------- Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even. steve |

A powerclean is when you pull the weight in an explosive movement to a "rack" at you chest. Your thinking of the snatch or clean and jerk.-------------- Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even. steve |

Snatches produce the most power of any lift. Cleans are second in that category. So to answer your question, yes they are a great power exercise when performed properly. Olympic lifts are primarily a lower body exercise when done properly. Arms work but are there more for support. Your legs do most of the work.

I do cleans and snatches on my lower back/legs day. I will sometimes do deadlifts on this day. I also keep this day seperate from my legs day, which is mostly centered around squats-------------- Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even. steve |

I think I'm going to start adding some snatches into my routines.-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it.
