Are you trying to lift the bar off the ground, raise it over your head, and then place it on your shoulders???? You're doing more of a clean & jerk than a squat! And you're expending all of your explosive energy even before you get to do the squat. If you're in a gym, use a squat rack to get up and under the bar. If you're at home, build or use something that you can set the bar under so you can get underneath it.-------------- Michael "Trample the weak; hurdle the dead!" |

i have a squat question: is there an extra special spot that the bar sits on your back where it doesn't cause any discomfort? because i can't do any heavy weights on my squat without feeling like i'm going to drop the bar because 1) my wrists feel like they're going to snap or 2) my upper back on the left side starts aching...it's just extremely uncomfortable and i would like to know is this normal? |

Well it does sound like it is not in the right place...the best way to tell you is that it should run along your traps, basically right where you neck runs into them...you will hear a lot telling it should go farther down but then you run into it slipping, also your hands may be in to far try reaching out on the bar more-------------- IF YOU CAN STILL ITCH YOUR NOSE AFTER ARM DAY, GO DO ANOTHER SET!!! |

By all means, do so, and also try it a little farther down. There is a natural spot for the bar that you need to find..-------------- IF YOU CAN STILL ITCH YOUR NOSE AFTER ARM DAY, GO DO ANOTHER SET!!! |

Is this the same thing as a leg press? Cos there might be a machine at your gym for this. -------------- *My body only feels good when it burns! *Little voice telling you to quit? Put your fingers in your ears! *"Life shrinks or grows in proportion to one's courage" |

hey , if you have problems getting the bar up , use a squat rack , so you can already position yourself under the bar where you feel comfortable , and have safety in case you drop it , but you should also have atleast 1-3 spotters. |

============ Quoting from Kalanchoe: Is this the same thing as a leg press? Cos there might be a machine at your gym for this. ============= No, it is not. The leg press is great for developing primarliy the muscle groups of the front of the legs, such as the quads and rectus femoris. However, the free-weight squat, when done properly, will work the entire leg as well as the glutes. Plus, it also helps develop connective tissue strength in the same regions. In fact, if done heavy and strict (as in a powerlifting regimen), it can become a full body workout. -------------- Michael "Trample the weak; hurdle the dead!" |

when i squate ecpcially when i do more than 315lbs i put it just a lil lower than my upper traps.........i get my arms as close to my body as possible and i shrug up, as if i was trying to military press it. the shrugingging of ur shoulders keeps it off ur spin and makes a "pocket" in ur back of thick muscle.......if ur shrug up enough its gonna hurt anyways the shrug helps and it also gives u a hell- acious trap work out in the process. good luck |

I had the problem of discomfort on my back when squatting before too. Some gyms have a pad that you can put on the bar. It attaches on by velcro. If your gym has that try it. Its worked for me. |
