For me it is the knowledge that I can get away fight something that I know can be defeated. I also know that for us depressed prone people, when you exercise run or lift it releases endorphins in you blood. These little guys make us feel good. The heavier and more intnese the workout the more you get. So I know that if I lift I will feel better, cause after all anywya you look at it exercise is a win win deal......Also I play BB King music and watch old Arnold/action movies. So hang in there go to the gym and lift it will help.-------------- IF YOU CAN STILL ITCH YOUR NOSE AFTER ARM DAY, GO DO ANOTHER SET!!! |

Working out with friends really helps get me motivated! Or maybe thinking about summer clothes... ;) And like Mutt said, music helps too!I read another post you wrote about how you run a lot? Maybe you could start out with a short easy run outside to help motivate? Trail running with pretty scenery helps motivate me a lot. Take care Kalanchoe! -Krb |

Yo Kalanchoe! We'll have none of that negative thinking here! Just make sure you're rested and feeling 100% - then jump back into the game. Often, a bit of a layoff is just what we need to be extra motivated when we get back into the swing of things. Also, be sure to enjoy your successes - no matter how small you might think they are. Whether it's a 1/2 pound of fat lost, a 1/4 inch of muscle gained, 2 extra reps on a lift, an extra 5 pound plate, or simply your commitment to change, be sure to wallow in the accomplishment and pat yourself on the back. Consider this layoff to be a success - you "forced" yourself to take a well-earned break, you're recharging your batteries and allowing your muscles to recuperate. My weakness/downfall is food (see photo at left for evidence). My self-induced food rehabilitation program (aka diet) is 3 months old and I'm constantly being bombarded with pizza commercials, folks bringing in chocolate to work, my wife making lasagna, and even Girl Scouts selling their cookies! When I'm feeling down, I check out my old photos and then some newer photos. My changes aren't dramatic, but their enough to keep my motivation going. I also check out the profiles of the folks on this board. When I'm feeling all "woe is me", reading about the perseverance of others (and the obstacles that they overcome) really snaps me out of it. Then there are the workouts. I missed a couple Saturdays due to family obligations... but I managed to fit them in eventually. I looked at that as a success, not a failure. Consider your "balancing act" before letting yourself get unmotivated. Oh, and for cardio, I bought myself a portable (mini) radio. Sounds lame, but the loud music has been enough to make cardio fun -- well, maybe not FUN, but certainly less boring at 5:30 AM. Now, get back in there and give 'em hell! You can do it! You can't dwell on all your successes forever, so go make some new ones! tsmd |

I know what you mean about discouragement Kalanchoe. I've had a nagging shoulder ache for quite a while now. I can't lift heavy weights and it's so disappointing. However, I just use lighter weights and really focus on the muscle group I'm trying to work. My chest is suffering a bit though because I can't nail my pecs with any heavy weights. I know if I don't take it easy and let it heal, I'll be in for more dissappointment.Hang in there Kalanchoe, I am so you can too. |

Two things work for me.1) Music. Upbeat fast tempo music! Being that I'm a girl, it may seem strange, but that Eye of the Tiger from the Rocky movies REALLY get's me going! Also, 80's club dance music! 2) Take a picture of yourself in shorts and a tank top from the front, side, and back. Then get a picture of someone who you want to look like. Hang them all up beside each other where you can see them every day! When I look at the pictures I took when I started a week ago, then I look at pictures of what I looked like 10 years ago when I was healthy. That is enough to get my butt in gear. ;) -------------- ~Jennifer http://www.gwindalyn.com |

Truthfully, get dolled up in your most flattering outfit, go out, and strut your stuff. The confidence boost will have you back in the gym, feeling good about yourself. -------------- Think you can or think you can't; either way you're right--Goethe |
