What do you guys think of russian twists? I once bought a book entitled Hardcore Bodybuilding and it said that russian twists were the only ab exercise you would ever need. I never see anyone doing them though...

no one does them because they're sooo hard! though they are good, there are other, easier alternatives. do crunches for your upper abs, leg raises for your lowers, and either standing side twists or seated oblique bends for your obliques.

cainsands, they're when you lay on your back with your legs up in the air while a partner throws your legs down from side to side. it's truly a great exercise, but is hard to do.

Actually that's not the way it was in the book. You set yourself up like when you're doing a regular crunch and take a barbell and hold it at arms length in front of you, raise yourself up, like when you're doing a crunch (or maybe a little higher up) and twist your body to the right and then to the left. It's best to have somebody hold your feet down.

I've done them.. and my brother has used them before too.. they hit your obliques pretty hard if you can get them right.. I mess them up a lot.. and just holding a five pound plate (ya i'm weak)... but I usually use something like my chair (its heavy enough to work) or a desk of some sort to hold my feet down.. Really though for working that area I like these other kind of crunches (not sure what their called though) where you get in position for like a crunch.. now you twist your knees over so their on the floor and keep them there.. then you crunch up.. in the process you'll probably twist to the direction you have your knees sitting... (kind of like a side crunch I guess but your not starting out laying on your side)...

It seems there are alot of options. I think those russian twists would add some mass to your abs.

Life in Russia must of been pretty boring back in the day... "What are you doing today?" Ivan asked Vladmir. "I have nothing to do, just drink Vodka. How about lie on the floor, grab that block, rise up and twist from side to side for many hours?" Ivan exclaimed, "That is wonderful idea! Holy cow, now we are really smart!"
