Hi,

I noticed from the start of my workout that my muscles gained noticeably in size, especially my arms and chest. Now following my second week, they seem to have decreased in size a bit. They're definitely harder... but I'm starting to look like I did before I began working out. Is this normal? I'm not taking supplements yet but I've increased my intake of protein substantially.

One thing I might add... crunches and leg raises are a lot easier now. I know my abs are responding favorably!

glad your so positive about the first week but get serious eh. Nothing happened in one week and then shrunk again, that's tosh. Don't let your mind tell you things are happening that aint. Through exercise you probably lost some fat, gained some tone or firmness, got blood into the muscle thus pumping it up for a while. Don't think weights is all about the heaviest weight you can lift as I don't want to see an injury here either.. don't get tense. Take a few tips and realise the body can change in a day just over water content. I am up to 80 kilos in the evening and on odd mornings I'm 77.5 kilos so you see it's not important at this stage. But the fact you are working out is!

Tip- measure everything(weight, chest, waist, calf- go to www.mybodycomp.com and fill all that in even?) today and photograph yourself too. Remeasure yourself in 2 months time, photograph and compare everything! You will see results and have evidence to be proud of.

Don't increase porotein or no foodstuffs substantially. Eat a good balanced diet with the right nutrients per day. Fill in your profile and go to basalmetabcalc.com too! Learn about yourself and the food values you need, a little bit of science and see the rewards in your stats.

Then theres the weight training bit- it's got nothing to do with the weight but the style of how you lift, make every move measured, slow, accurate positioning, monitor the weight used and try to increase either reps or sets each workout and then increase weight by 1/2 kilo every week+ dropping the sets/reps back down and be patient- this gives you another statistic such as if you bench 40 kilos now for 3 sets/12reps then in 8 weeks time will you be benching 48 and in 16 weeks 54 kilos etc...

seeing your progress and understanding how you are making it adds to your motivation. Keep it up and all the best

Sorry for the delay in response. Finally uploaded a picture and filled out my profile. As you can see in the pic, I've got some work to do!

Thanks everyone for your support and encouragement...

Neil, your advice is well taken and I'll concentrate on several suggestions you have. I'm definitely more toned as you say and although I have soreness, it's not too bad. I guess the first week gains were mainly due to the shock my muscles had in being exercised at all! BTW... a 1/2 kilo every week? What does that translate to in pounds?

You may want to try to keep a photo journal for yourself, too, you can see the results and it will keep you motivated if you are anything like me - I get discouraged if I don't feel things happening and I'm usually impatient! It helps to check my pics and see that I have made some definate changes!

Good luck!
