I went shopping with my mom the other day and I found some foods that I think are pretty healthy. What do you all think?
First off, I'll start with the healthy hotdog links. Yeah I know. It's kinda crazy so tell me what you think about them. The name of these are called Smart Dogs. They are rich in soy protein. 7 grams per link. Nutrition Facts Serving Size 1 link Calories 45 Calories from fat 0! Total Fat 0g Saturated fat 0g Cholesterol 0mg! Sodium 320mg Potassium 250 mg Total Carbohydrate 2g Dietary Fiber 1g Sugars 1g Protein 9 g Ingredients: Water, Soy protein isolate, wheat gluten, evaporated cane juice, salt, yeast extract, soy sauce (water soybeans, wheat, salt), granulated garlic, carradeenan, spice extract, naural flavors (from vegetable sources), Vegetable gum, natural smake flacor potassium chloride, tomato pulp. I don't know if you're supposed to cook them first or not. I usually didn't when I ate unhealthy about a year ago. Of course it wasn't these kinds of hot dog links anyways it was the normal ones. The Flavor of these hot dog links are not very good. It kinda tastes like uncooked meat. Now on to the next food source. It is cereal. The name of the cereal is Morning Start Crunchy Almond Crisp. I think these are pretty healthy as well. Nutrition Facts Serving Size 1/2 cup Calories 90 Calories from fat 15 Total Fat 1.5g Saturated fat 0g Cholesterol 0mg Sodium 75mg Total Carbohydrate 10g Dietary Fiber 7 g Sugars 1g Protein 15g Calcium 4% Iron 10% Folic Acid 50% Ingredients: soy grits, Wheat gluten, Soy protein isolate, corn bran, polydextrose, sliced almonds, corn starch, inulin, natural and artificial flavor, caramel color, suralose (splend brand sweetener), vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) as natural anitoxidants, and Folic acid It is rich in folic acid which it states is a key ingredient for women. There is 8 grams of soy protein per serving which is pretty darn good if you ask me. With a serving of these and 2 links of those smart dogs, you'll be pretty close to 25 grams of the recommended soy protein consumption. There is a good amount of Fiber in this cereal and it has lots of protein. Sodium is low and so is fat. This cereal is by the way Atkins aproved. Please post your comments about these food choices and the best times they should be eaten. DX |

Well, I would not eat either, but that is me. I am not a fan of soy, and avoid it like the plague.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

============
Quoting from bigandrew: I believe soy in men lowers testasterone......it has estrogentic effects on men. ============= from what i have read, i will desagree: Now to address the myth that Soy may lower testosterone levels in males. One study that used Rhesus monkeys found that soy proteins had no effects on the reproductive hormones of these animals. Testosterone, DHEAS, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), testicular weight, prostatic weight, and other measurements were taken. They found no difference in hormonal changes between male animals who were given Soy and Egg protein. |

Yep, for every study that decrys soy as an estrogen enhancing effect, there is one from the other side that counters it. Keep in mind one thing, the soy business is a multi million/billion dollar industry. Soy everything is promoted, it is cheap to process and a cash cow. Again, if you have the time, read my post....and notice the tons of doctors in the references.

Sounds like there's a ton of unnecessary sodium in those dogs...
If you're looking for a relatively "ok" cereal check out Kashi Go Lean. There are definitely better breakfast options than cereal but I tend to eat cereal for the convenience factor (bad erika!) :big_smile: My opinion only. |

Until more substantial evidence is presented as to the "goodness" of soy, I avoid it. I have found through experience over years that when big business is involved in something, beware. They somehow have the audacity after the money is made to come out and say, oh well, maybe it wasn't the best. Soy has been around for ages, and is so plentiful, there is big dollars to be made, and soy is extremely cheap and abundant, so again, is a cash cow for the industry. I prefer to err on the side of caution, and too many doctors are not in favor, and I tend to believe the research. They have nothing to gain if you know what I mean.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

that is your call...if it does not matter to you, then use it. If I was going to use it up(if it were mine), I would use small amounts mixed with my whey for any time other than post workout.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |
