Hey i am new to this group and new to weight lifting,I have come to develop a major problem.... I followed the set amount of sets and reps to do while working out as set out by my program set to my specific needs, i picked a weight that by the 15th and final rep i was at my absolute last bit of strength to lift the weight, this is the way its supposed to be right? if not please tell me, here is the problem i am suffering....

I worked out my arms on monday evening, then yesterday (tuesday) my arms were pretty sore but with stretching it soreness seemed to go away, so i chalked it off as just beginners cramps and my muscles getting used to the work out but today two days after my workout (wednesday) my arms are so unbelievably sore, i can barely lift them. if this was a pulled muscle wouldnt this have hurt the day of or day after working out? or did i just majorly overwork my arms too fast??? both arms are sore in the same spots, biceps and triceps are so unbelievably sore i contemplated heading to the hospital, in my profession i need to be in good shape but not sore or it really affects my working ability. could someone with experience please tell me what im doing wrong? it would be much appreciated!

you arent doing anything wrong, that is just a sore muscle. when you start working out you will get really sore like that and it will last a couple of days at least. infact after a hard leg day, sometimes i am sore for up to 5 days. keep with it, the sorness will go away, and you will get your body in great shape

thats a good thing. it means u worked out just enough. and once you get some days of rest itll be healed and ur muscle should have recovered and grown.

You obviously can quit if you want but you've already gotten by the biggest hurdle and that's getting started. You'll continue to know that you've worked out but the pain won't be as severe as it is now. I've been doing this for a few moons and I feel some stiffness but that's about it.

Your body actually does more work when you aren't exercising. Since, your muscles are repairing. Working out is based on damaging the muscles. Then allowing your body to grow by fixing the damange. The burn you feel is you ripping your muscles. The sore the next morning, is your body repairing.

Camaro...when you work out you're technically damaging your muscles by tearing down the fibers. With proper rest, diet and nutrition your body rebuilds the muscles bigger and stronger then they were before. That's why you're so sore.

The good news is as Mike said...you're past the hard part. If you quite now then you only going to have to start again down the road.

Bad news...it'll take you a few weeks before your body gets used to it and becomes more efficient at repairing the muscles. Then it typically won't hurt near as much and you'll probably be back on these boards concerned cause you don't feel like you're working out well enough since your muscles don't hurt as much.

Hang in there!!

It is the newbie syndrome raising its ugly head. Good news is that it will be over shortly. Just take hot showers and try to move around the muscle that is sore. You can take asprin if needed but I hate to take it unless really needed.

Side note: Most people think that you need to feel sore after a workout to have a good one. That is a MYTH. My biceps are one group that almost never gets sore, yet my Tris do. My Biceps are almost 19 inches right now. So I know my routine is working. Soreness is called DOMS. IT is a physcial reaction to an overload ( OMG I almost sounded like Wrestler!) Sorry. DOMS is Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. Usually felt 24-48 hours after a workout. in some cases it can be quite painful. It DOES NOT mean you worked out enough or right if you got it, and it DOES not mean that you did not work out right if you did not get it. Hope this helps!

Cameromark,

I know it sounds stupid for you right now, but it did to me until I did it. Try getting up a little earlier and heading to the Gym to get a good start on the day. My wife made fun of me and told me she wasn't budging out of the bed as my daughter and I began going at 5am. She now gets up at 4:30 to get ready to go. We jump start our day that way and we have energy all day. Don't ask me how or why, I just know it works.

Hi Mark, You still hanging in there? If you really want to feel and look the best that you possibly can do not give up. After a while the pain you are experiencing will subside. I walked around with "alligator arms" for days on end trying to get back in the swing of things. Now it's all good. Since you are new to lifting remember not to sacrifice form vs. heavy weights. Really concentrate on feeling the movement. Always warm up and stretch between sets. Welcome!
