I just got a TKO bag, and honestly, I don't know how to use it... Impulse buy, I guess.. I got it all set up, and now I don't know what to do with it. It came with a jump rope, hand wraps, and gloves. Any ideas?

GoldenGloves? I think this one is back to you...

Emily, I can give you a Martial Arts workout to do with it if that's your desire. Feel free to email me. I'm going to be out of the office for the rest of the day, but I'll check here when I get home.

Greatest impulse buy you will ever buy, Great workout and great for relieving stress...First thing to do is wrap your hands and put on the gloves....I will be posting a video soon of me working the heavy bag a bit so that should give you an idea, but the best thing to do is just to hit it get a rhythm going and get lost into music or something off some sort..Dont go ape crazy on it and just beat the hell out of it (unless you are relieving stress)

Hit it a few times get some footwork going circle around the bag..Act as if it is hitting you back...Bob and weave and just smack away it...Hard to explain as I told others, Boxing is sport where majority of it comes natural...Once you practice on it you will get the feel for it...That is the best thing you can do. Also you might want to try to break it down into rounds do like 5 or 6 3 minutes rounds w/ 1 minute rests in between.

Also put that jump rope to use, Jump rope is one of the best cardio/fat burning exercises a person can do.

the bag I have is in the corner of the garage... so I don't really have a lot of room to move around. Everytime I hit the damn thing, it flails all over the place and hits the wall. There's really nowhere else to put it because I have a pool table that I don't plan on moving any time soon..... So here's another question: How do I keep it from moving without drilling holes in my garage floor?

Get brackets and hang it in a corner....Or get a stand for it so you dont have to hang it

I would like to see that video, you have some great suggestions and I am liking this more and more every day and I believe that it has helped me lose inches quicker. I don't think I will ever stop punching that bag as it has been both a great stress reliver and exercise that I do consistently without boredom settling in.

When was the last time you ever seen an out of shape boxer? The heavyweight division doesnt count.

Also just a tidbit of advice

1 3 minute round of boxing is equivalent to running a mile....I believe that 100%

I hang mine in a corner, that way it doesn't swing all over or I'd probably hurt myself, I plan on moving it so it swings more when I get better.

ARE YOU SERIOUS?? One - 3 minute round is equivalent to running a mile? What I've been doing is about 3 minutes standing sideways with the two punch with one arm and one punch with the other, then I switch and do 3 with the other side, I use the ducking move following end of swing. Then I do one punch both arms for 3 minutes and fast, then I do one punch one arm, kick, and continue for 3 minutes and then do the other side. I don't know all the jargon yet, but I end up with about 20 minutes of near straight boxing but a breather a the end of each 3 minutes with some stepping. Does that sound right...I have to read what all this is I am doing, but if feels right, it is doing me wonders and my stamina is amazing - my husband tried to do exactly what I do and he couldn't do it for 5 minutes and I think of him in pretty good shape, so I was pleased. Do you have any other advice, sorry to take up your time, it is just real good to see someone so knowledgeable in this area on this site.

Veda - Sounds like you found a good routine. I'm not a boxer, but I am a Martial Artist (Not a 2nd Degree Black Belt yet). That sounds like a helluva workout.

When I work the heavy bag with my arms (not kicking), I do 10 jabs with each hand, 10 Jab - Cross combos with each side, 10 Jab - Cross - Hook combo with each side. Then I work Straight Punches (60 high, 60 middle, and 60 low in differing combos). Next are the other strikes 10 to 20 of each. It's a lot of sweat, and I could believe the 3 minutes = 1 mile of running.

Keep up the great workout.

Yes as long as you are keeping your feet moving as well, Impressive isnt it?

Yes what you are doing should be fine as long as you are breaking a sweat from it.

Thanks, Jonathan, I think I will throw in some of your routine, the jab-cross-hook combo's. I work it HARD, I really enjoy it and believe it to be one of the best workouts I can do. I do this everyday, I don't know if that is good or not, but that is what I have been doing for 6 weeks now, though the routine has increased in intensity and reps much more.

Goldengloves, I try to make sure I am shifting weight from front to back legs and kinda hop around and do that lunge/duck thing. I must sound hilarious trying to explain this! And I definately break a sweat, it's straight to the shower when I am done!

Hey folks..

Did some web surfing and found this website.. Pretty cool and the forums have some great topics. This is my fist post as I would like to add me 2 cents to the topic at hand..

I am a boxer and would suggest that anyone getting into it and using a heavy bag, please use hand wraps like Golden Gloves said. Most of the bags you can but in your local sporting goods stores are pretty crappy. When I say crappy I mean that the bag is hard as a rock! You can easily brack your hand. If your heavy bag is rock hard, go out and but 16 ro 20oz. BAG GLOVES (not sparing ot fighting gloves) The bag gloves have extra padding on the knuckles for added protection. Trust me on this, I learned the hard way..

Also for beginners try 2 mins ob the bag and 1 min rest. Then work into 3 mins 1 mins rest and finally 3 mins 30 sec rest. And yes, like Gloden Gloves said.. 1 rd sure does feel like running a mile..

hey, ive been looking to get a heavy bag, but i was told for martial arts, its better to get one that isnt hanging. Any recommendations??? Also, wheres the best place to buy one.... Im a college student... so me and money arent getting along very well nowadays, so if any one knows of a vendor that sells them for a respectable price, please let me know.

I agree. For Martial Arts, you want your bag on a base, not hanging.

I bought mine from a 6th degree black belt I knew who had bought himself a new one. He and my instructor are friends.

Check Century. They seem to be one of the best brands.
