a good %of1rm to use on floor press

2005/01/15, 11:34 PM
Just wondering what people who have done floor barbell/DB presses or close grip presses like to use for weight in terms of 1rm.....

I try to touch both arms to floor, pause for a sec, then explode as fast as I can....my question is if this is similar to speed bench press where it's good to use between 35-60%...should I also focus on low reps? I started doing it with 4-10 reps because I don't have a power rack i have to improvise with some less than sturdy 'places' to put the weight on...Today for example I put the weight on the leg hold for decline bench....got underneath it and went to it....Time before a friend handed me the weight....I also do it as my last exercise so that I could use lighter weights...I appreciate all the feedback

I do it after my dynamic bench day.....heavy since I conceider that lock out area one of my weaknesses along with my upper chest. I do my reps under 5, and as heavy as I can.

You can use dbs too menace.....lil harder too.

I do DB floor flyes.....but with barbell it gets complicated since we don't have a powerack....so I don't know what to do....especially if I want to go heavy...

do you have those, step up blocks? She shoudl be kinda wide, sinc eyou whoel foot has to be on them.....set them up behind you head and set it on that, just make sure it don't roll off lol

......or better yet, set it up to where, they are next to you, so if you poop out, you set them on that, and you have it about 3 in off your chest, just enough room to slid out.

even though I hate smith machines, you could try one of those, if it goes all the way to the floore.

also you could stack 45lbs plates next to you on floore, and you can rest the weight on that if you poop out......i think 2 or 3 would give you the height, you need to do the range and give you the safty to set it down and get out form under it. After all the top 1/3 or so of motion is what your going for!

Thanks a lot, I'll try both to see which way works better...

I'll try the smith machine as well but I don't think it goes down enough...

I got the same problem at my gym, they aint got a power rack. I just get my partner to give me a lift. I put the weight on a bench but, it is not very safe.

Thats a great idea andrew. I never thought of that. Till now I have never done floor press because my power rack doesnt go near low enough, though our idea to stack 45's sounds like it might do the trick. ugh, just dont speak of the smith machine to me.

I think i will try this next week for my max effort movement.
Ill let you know how it turns out

Floor barbell benchpress I use around 75%OF 1RM FOR ASET OF FIVE or whatever fills good at the time, when your home alone its hard to lift with a 95% and 100%floor presses.

well last night i did floor presses for the first time in my life... at least i believe they where floor presses  i set up 2 buckets where i layed my barbel on it and it was so unstable...it was crazy i dont have enough weights to pack it up anyway after this i tried my first set ever using 75% of my 1rep for normal bench press... anyway i managed the weight and thought it was too easy i stopped at 10 as i figured this isnt really gonna help my strength if im doing over 6.. right? so i kept increasing the weight.. anyway i ended up able to do 6 reps of my actuall Max bench weight... is this normal amount of weight to be using??? i guess it makes sense as ur cuttin out the lower portion and im assuming the speed bench and rowing will help on my bottom more and floor pressing will take care of other part.. but as i was doing this exercise i didnt actually feel lyk anything was being worked is there any tips to this exercise??? (also something good u guys use to put the weight on? i couldnt even drop the weight back on the buckets they where so unstable so i had to slam the weight back down behind my head after each set...i had no spotter:O all i can say is im looking forward to other exercises i neva tried in powerlifting :D
