Hi, everyone. My name is Dave and I've just joined freetrainers. Quite frankly, the timing could not have been better. I had been contemplating signing up for another online fitness training system which is sponsored by a men's health magazine. I had my doubts about their nutritional system as it seemed to be targeted towards someone who actually knows their way around the kitchen! Well, just as I was about to take plunge by hitting "submit" on their site and then going to look for an apron, I thought "maybe their is an alternative out there" Well, sure enough, there is!

The thing that I think I will like best about freetrainers is that I can input what I eat, and the dietary recommendation seems to be based upon that. (is that a correct assumption? I put together what I've consumed in a given day and the system tells me what I should add or subtract to my diet?)If I understand it correctly, this will make things so much better for me! (imagine how easy it will be to just click on "Rice Krispies" and be told that I should add a serving of strawberries next time rather than, like on the other site, be told that I have to go out and buy a certain cut of meat, garnish it a certain way, etc...)

So, it's with great excitement (and relief!) that I find myself here. To tell you a little bit about me specifically...

I am about 6 weeks away from my 40th birthday. I've always maintained a weight of around 180lbs (on a 5'10" frame)But, throughout the year 1999, because of a busy work schedule, I became very inactive. By the end of that year, I had put on an additional 25 pounds.

Beginning in January of 2000, I had my "significant other" (as I like to call her!) move in with me. Not only did Angela love to cook, she also reintroduced me to such things as cupcakes, twinkies, tonic (That's what we call "soda" here in Boston) etc...

Well, before long, I was up to 255lbs! Can you believe what she did to me??? (I am kidding, of course. I take full responsibility for my weight gain. I only "blame" her in a completely playfull manner)

After spending the next 3 years about 75 pounds heavier that I had ever been in my life, I made a New Year's resolution on December 31, 2002 to get down to my high school weight of 180lbs.

The end result is that, today, I weigh 188lbs. Now, while I suppose I should be proud of myself, I'm not exactly happy about how I lost all that weight. You see, shortly after making my resolution, Angela's mom had become ill. Angela was forced to go back to Wisconsin (where she's originally from) to take care of her mom while she recuperated from surgery. With her gone for all these months, I fell back into my old eating habits. Namely...

Toast & cereal.

Yes, I lost 67 pounds by eating nothing but breakfast 3 times a day! (somehow, I've managed to lower my bodyfat percentage to about 18%..which is only 3 percentile points more than where a man my age should be at. Once I drop those last 8 pounds, I'll be right at 15%)

My reason for joining freetrainers must be obvious by now;

I want to eat something besides toast & cereal!

Sure, I'd still like to sneak in the occasional cupcake (which I haven't touched since making my resolution) but I need guidance.

Add to that the fact that, on my 40th birthday, I plan on joining a local ice hockey team (I never got to play as a kid and, if that old saying of "Life begins at 40" is true, I want to give the hockey team a shot as I do not want to be an 80 year old man with regrets of having never played...plus, it will cause me a lot less trouble than buying a red sports car and chasing after women half my age :-)

So, there you have my introduction. (did I write "QUICK INTRODUCITON" in the subject line? sorry!)

I'm looking forward to getting to know my fellow members.
