I'm doing about 100 sit-ups, crunches, twists etc 3-4 days a week. I wonder whether I ought to cut back to 2-3 days and maybe train with weights? Are weights advisable for abs? Any helpful hints?

(Not trying to build huge muscles here, just to add to definition).

you should only do abs 3 times a week. and if you are looking for cut and tone then no you dont use weights. if you are looking for bulk then yes use weights

What is your goal with the ab work? Are you looking for a six pack? If so, the best exersize will be table pushes.... push yourself away from the table... abs are all about diet and they only need to be worked as often as any other muscle...

I don't think you add definition>> I get angry at people doing sit-ups with their feet hooked under something. I Use to do that. Now that I'm not in the army I know better.. No wonder I could do 90 sit-ups in 2 minutes and then drag ass on a 2 mile run.. My hip flexers felt like rubber.. lol.. I have been using weights lately with crunches. Man, I love it.. When I go without the weight behind my head I feel the reps are alot easier.. ONe thing I learned in the army was doing bicycle crunches and they really hit those lower abs..

Sit up questions:
1.Are slant boards good lower abds?
2.What do you think of a doing crunches with a heavy weight at shoulder level?
3.Weights with crunches, are you hanging with the weights strapped to your waist or are you on the ground holding the weights while doing crunches?
4.Are crunches on a BOSU ball better since you have to engage more muscles to balance?
Note: 8 weeks post major abdominal surgery and I'm back to pre-surgery fitness!

The belly is usually the last place it comes off of. Hang in there.

DaveTheMan - why, what's wrong with hooking your feet? Does it mean you aren't exercising the muscles effectively?

SemiPro - I thought the abs were the only group that would benefit from everyday workout?

Table Pushes are pretty simple.. simply push yourself away from the table.... essiently, watch how much and what you eat. Diet is one of the most important things when it comes to the abs.

As for exercising the abs, why would you work them every day? They are a muscle, just like biceps or legs. No need to overdo them... endless crunches won't get you a six pack.
