Quick question for the veteran guys -

I started a new chest workout last night - it consisted of:

Incline Barbell Bench Press
Incline Dumbell Shoulder Press
Flat Dumbell Bench Press

The workout was great, however by the middle of the workout, my ARMS were exhausted. I didn't even feel the strain on my chest. To top things off, my right elbow is extremely sore today when I flex it. I'm thinking either I went to heavy or used the wrong form. Any suggestions or help???

Start off by doing flat bench or incline flys. It kind of takes your arms out of the equation so to speak and pre fatigues the chest. I do flat bench flys followed by bench press followed by incline dumbell presses. Try it or a combination that best suits you.

For me, it is easier to over do with dumbells and easier to injure yourself. I would back down on the weight and get the form perfect before moving up.

I also do exactly what agamble says and hit flyes or db presses first either inclined or declined and mix the approach up every couple of weeks.

The other option that I have been exploring is starting out using machines as opposed to free weights. I'm a beginner to lifting, however I am in decent shape overall. Would this be a major disadvantage or a good idea?? And as far as my elbow pain... do u guys have any idea why I have this?

If the elbow doesn't get better soon, see a Dr.

Machines and free weights are an excellent combo.

If I could only have one or the other it would be freeweights hands down. Machines isolate a muscle or muscle group.

Freeweights incorporate the surrounding muscles to stabilize as you do a movement.

Make sense??

You probably hyperextended your elbow...this will require taking a few days off. I agree with the others and contribute your injury and arm exhaustion to bad form. The trick is to go lighter and squeeze your chest at the top of movement. Fornow, try not to lock your elbows out (keep them slightly bent to prevent injury, especially if going heavy).

I know exactly what you mean. I was the same way for about 4 months, and I do think it has to do with your arms getting a little stronger. What the guys said about form is bang on as well. Now, I feel it in my chest and I concentrate on the muscle (focus) as I'm doing the movement. At least I feel like I'm getting more out of it.
