Some aches and pains are good. I usually felt some sort of aches and pains the day after I worked out.
Its where that saying "FEEL THE BUUUURN!" comes from. But you should be able to know the difference between the good aches from the bad aches. |

Of course you are suppose to escpecially after a good hard workout, this tells you that yous muscles have been worked and that they need to now be rested.

WM - not everyone gets DOMS but the majority of people do when first starting working out or starting a new routine. Since you just started, if you aren't feeling at the least some stiffness, you probably need to exert more.-------------- Mike in Pensacola Now. |

Don't get locked into a time frame. I try and keep my workouts intense but normally around 45 minutes max. Much longer than that and I have no reserves. Often when people first start out they can get more results from strict form and just making sure that the muscle you're targeting is the one actually being worked. We've all seen guys doing pulldowns using every upper body muscle EXCEPT the back. Personally, I try and hit failure at 12 reps max. I do go lighter occasionally but for me, anything over 15 reps feels like a waste of time as I'm not shooting for endurance.-------------- Mike in Pensacola Now. |

Great post Mike!
Elaborating on that, try and keep your workouts under 1 hour. 45 minutes is optimal, as that is when testosterone is peaked and right before cortisol starts to increase. Besides, if you can't get a good workout in in under an hour, your doing something wrong. DOMS is not a goal. It is an indicator. If your not sore, this doesn't mean you didn't get a good workout. Im doing all sorts of exercises, using free weights and machines. I do exercises with every major muscle in my body; traps, abs, chest, shoulders, calves, back, legs, forearms, triceps, and my biceps.

In the beginning, you can spend hours in the gym. Don't get caught up in this, as it cannot be sustained, and you will try to do this all the time and burn out. Research shows that after 45 min. - 1 hr. you start to lose intensity. Keep an eye on the big picture, the long term goal. This is like a job to get anywhere, you must do it consistently to get "paid".-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... |

alright, thats a good analogy.
I tried lifting more last night, but staying at the same amount of reps. And I ache today. I was working my traps and my shoulders. So today my forearms, traps and my shoulders are really sore. I guess Im gettin the hang of it then? |

Oh yes.
You have to remember that when you weight train, you're literally ripping the muscle (small rips, though). You build muscle when new muscle formed to heal the rips. You think tore muscle feels good? Heh. |

Yeah, I got done weightlifting about 4 hours ago (9:00pm) and I followed everyone's advice. I only weightlifted for about 45 minutes, and it worked out great.
I was doing my legs and calves today, but I think I need to lift a little harder. They dont hurt a bit, but I was shaking pretty bad when I was lifting. Am I supposed to shake pretty violently when lifting? |

That partially depends on your conditioning level but when I get the shakes (intense workout or otherwise) it just tells me I'm carb depleted. How long before your workout did you eat? I know it's kind of hard to watch your night time carb intake when you're working out that late.-------------- Mike in Pensacola Now. |

jease, I dont remember. Atleast 2-3 hours before, but IM not sure exactly. and I like to get my weightlifting in about an hour before I go to bed. so I weight lift, go take a shower, play some Halo and go to bed about 1 - 1.5 hours later.

A well diluted carb-protein shake is often helpful prior to your workout. -------------- Pain is only temporary, it is in your mind. If you can still walk, then you can still run. ============ Quoting from 7707mutt: The squat cage is holy ground. ============ |

Especially so if mass gains are your main concern. Never train without "fueling the tank".

You can really feel the difference between muscle extertion of body damage. If your sweating, and breathing hard and feel a solid but not painful aching sensation in your muscle that is good it means it's working hard. If you feel a sharp pain that causes you to wince and gasp well than stop doing whatever it is your doing, figure out what hurts, why it hurts, and go about making sure it's all set for later use. If you ignore the bad pain you're just hurting yourself which results in you being weaker in the long run so it's like what's the point.
