I was looking at an old post about this and I did some calculations. According to what bb1fit had posted, figure about 15-20 calories a day for men. Okay, I did on the low end for my weight and got 4,170/day (278 lbs). Also mentioned was a 50/20/30 radio (P/C/F) to lose weight. Using 4 cals/gram of protein and carbs and 9 cals/gram of fat, here are my numbers:
4,170 cals works out to:
521.25 grams protein/day = 2,085 cals
208.5 grams carbs/day = 834 cals
139.0 grams fat/day = 1,251 cals
This seems a little odd to me to say the least. Are my numbers way off? Comments? Suggestions? Should I buzz off?

I think that was for an extremely active male if I remember the post correctly. If that is you, I think it is correct. For big guys like me, I think it is approx 10-12 cal per pound

When dieting, atiger is right, those 10-15 calories are for activity levels when trying to gain, and even those are just approximations.

Protein seems high, carbs seem low..50/20/30 has worked for me in the past. I really felt good at the 50-30-20 macro, and even better at 40-40-20(energy wise). The protein breakdown has always flustered me. I can't seem to find the answer on that one. 1 gram per bodyweight or 1-1/2 or 2, is this lean muscle mass, or the weight you want to maintain, or the weight you think you should be at??
Thanks a lot, now you got me thinking about it all. Don't buzz off!!!

Well, the 50/20/30 diet is when bodyfat starts getting in low numbers, and gets harder to lose. by cutting some carbs, you need to increase protein dramatically and fats. (the calories have to come from somewhere, and good EFA's illicit no insulin rise, and in fact help insulin sensitivity, while making up some of the calories).

Thanks all. I worked stuff up and am going to have a go with 11 cals/pound and see if that helps. I'll try a breakdown of 50/30/20 for a bit and see how it goes.
I appreciate the help from all of you.
