Hey guys, well, ever since I started working out I've been doing 20 minutes or so of cardio before I do my weights. I know that for some reason, it is suggested that you separate them, but the cardio always seems to get me in the mood. So, twice now I have skipped the cardio, once because I had a cold and couldn't breath properly, and once again on monday because of twisting my ankle over the weekend, well, I found that both times my weight sessions were kinda pathetic...I couldn't lift as much or do as many reps as I do when I do cardio first. I figured it must be the adrenaline boost that comes from the cardio, so why is this a bad thing?

Same with me, I need to do cardio before I lift or my sessions are really weak. Maybe it has to do with endorphines(i think thats what causes the refreshed feeling after running) or something giving you an extra boost.

Maybe you guys just aren't properly warming up before your regular weight lifting sessions, and the cardio is serving as a warm up. At least that seems to be the simple answer to me. -------------- Your two most important minerals: Iron and Chalk. Cut the cardio down to about 6 or 7 minutes and you should feel the same results without exhausting your body more then it needs to be. 20 minute warmup is just way to long.

my 20 or 30 minutes doing cardio aren't just a warm up, that is my cario work, and I can't really split them up so it will have to do. The only days that I cut my cardio short are leg days.

If you cant to cardio on seperate days, do it at seperate times in the day. Why does your cardio have to be done in the gym??? And obviously 30 minutes isnt a warm up. What I meant, is that it SERVES as a warm up. I am sure if you went through a proper pre-session warm up prior to lifting, you would experiance the same results. Also, here is your thinking... You were sick, and you had a hurt ankle, so you skipped cardio. You noticed that on these days (while you were sick and hurt) that you couldn't lift as much. Seems like common sense to me. If there is no way around seperating your cardio and lifting, then do the cardio after your lifting. At least, that's what most ppl would recommend -------------- To have talent is to have limits. Well, I don't go to a gym, all my working out is at home. I really have no other time of day to do cardio, I have one time slot and have to work with that. I've tried warm ups that just include a little treadmill, some stretching, and warm up sets, so if that isn't what you mean by warming up properly I don't know what is. I'll try doing the cardio after the weights although I can't quite see having the ooomph to do it. Still and all, the question was pretty simple, I just wanted to know why it was bad to do cardio before weights in the first place.

So, If I walk on a treadmill at a decent pace for 6-7 minutes before I work out would that be a sufficient warm up. Also, I've heard it's not good to do too much cardio after an intense workout, so should I do that in the PM if I workout in the AM?

Jordan...that's what I do. Along with a light stretch after the 6-7 minute cardio warmup and low weight on the first reps for the range of motoin stretch. It works well for me.
Try to do your cardio on you off day for weights. I do weights on Mon/Wed/Fri and cardio on Tue/Thurs. |
