From Oxygen magazine
It doesn't pay to wait If you aren't eating protein after your workout, you may have trained in vain. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health divided 13 people new to exercising into two groups: half ingested a protein drink within five minutes of finishing a workout, and the other half after two hours. At the end of 12 weeks, those who consumed the drink within minutes had a 1.8% increase in lean muscle mass, and those who waited over two hours actually decreased muscle mass by 1.5%. The only difference between the two groups was the time of thier protein intake. -------------- Vision without action is a daydream, Action without vision is a nightmare. -- Japanese Proverb -- |

What other options are there instead of protien shakes? I know you want something quick, but at this point I can't afford to drop that much dough on a protien shake.

Wow! That is interesting, thank you! When I am at home I do the protein drink after lifting, but at the gym I have brought a protein bar, do you think that would have the same benefits? It is 45 minutes before I am home and I thought that would be better than to wait that long.-------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. That's a good question. I try to drink mine right after my workout but it takes me a good 10-20 minutes to get showered and back to my workplace.

Have you done much shopping Tim? I've found pretty reasonably priced protein several places online. We have a fitness place here that sells it reasonably here as well.

Don't shoot the messenger but bars aren't as good as shakes. Could you carry the powder and shake it into a water bottle?

protein bars don't digest as fast as shakes do, so the benefits aren't the same. the point of drinking a shake is getting it in your system so your body can recover fast. if you're eating solid food you might as well be waiting an extra hour and drinking the shake.
try pre-mixing your shake, putting it in the freezer, and letting it thaw in your locker while you work out. or just put however many scoops of protein you use, put it in a shaker bottle, and add the water at your gym. ============ Quoting from vedakathryn: Wow! Yep, i actually mix my powders and divide them into two small shakers - one for immediate PWO consumption (I add water at the fountain in the gym and drink it in the locker room) and then I shower and dress, fill the second shaker with water and drink on the way out and on the way home. For those of you not as obsessive - one shaker would do, how hard is it to throw powder in a container and then fill it up after you workout?-------------- Vision without action is a daydream, Action without vision is a nightmare. -- Japanese Proverb -- |

yea....liquids digest faster.....so they reach your muscles faster....however if you cannot premix shakes and take them with you...bars are fine....they'll still reach your muscles within an hour...just make sure they have 30-40g protein and double that amount in simple sugars...ie sugar...look on the ingredients list....if they don't have enough...drink it down with gatorade....
Asimmer I am having hard time believing that....simply put I find it hard to generalize something that was done with 13 people to the human population as a whole.....there are also possible confounding variables that perhaps were not discussed that explain the results rather than the timing of protein....I just have hard time swallowing such studies....they can't concretely prove anything.... I've done some looking... found some that are priced fairly well, just can't afford to spend too much these days... I may do some more searching and see if I can find some less expensive.

The only water at our gym is toilet water, lol! They have been open for a couple months now and haven't added a functional water supply, even a working bathroom sink yet and that is discouraging, but I was working around it by bringing the bars. Half the time they don't have water for sale and I forget mine, it's just a matter of getting my act together and thinking about it before I leave for the day! I like the idea of freezing it, that may work! As soon as they get some form of water supply other than out of the toilet I will definately just scoop the powder and go! Thanks for the ideas!-------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan.
